The Characterization of the Leaf Language Classes

چکیده
The results of this paper were obtained independently by the two authors and appeared in their Ph.D. theses [7, 20]. A preliminary version with the title was presented by the rst author at the Conference of Structure in Complexity Theory 1994 [6]. Im Neuenheimer Feld 294, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany, email: [email protected] Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Informazione, Via Salaria 113, 00198 Roma, Italy, email: [email protected] Bovet, Crescenzi, and Silvestri [8, 9], and independently Vereshchagin [22], showed that many complexity classes in the polynomial time setting are leaf language classes, i.e. classes which are determined by two disjoint languages. They gave many examples but they did not characterize the set of leaf language classes. This will be done in this paper. It will be shown that the set of leaf language classes equals the set of countable complexity classes which, with respect to polynomial-time many-one reducibility , are closed downward and closed under join. Moreover, the set of classes characterized by two complementary leaf languages will be shown to be equal to the set of complexity classes which, with respect to , have a complete set and are closed downward.

A characterization of the leaf language classes 1
Bovet, Crescenzi, and Silvestri ( 1992, 1995), and independently Vereshchagin ( 1994), showed that many complexity classes in the polynomial time setting are leaf language classes, i.e. classes which are determined by two disjoint languages. They gave many examples but they did not characterize the set of leaf language classes. This will be done in &his paper. It will be shown that the set of l...
متن کاملLindström Quantifiers and Leaf Language Definability
We show that examinations of the expressive power of logical formulae enriched by Lindström quantifiers over ordered finite structures have a well-studied complexity-theoretic counterpart: the leaf language approach to define complexity classes. Model classes of formulae with Lindström quantifiers are nothing else than leaf language definable sets. Along the way we tighten the best up to now kn...
متن کاملEffect of tree decline and slope aspect on the leaf morphological traits of Persian oak trees
This study was accomplished with the aim of investigating the effects of tree decline and slope aspect on leaf morphological traits and determining the indicator morphological traits that indicate the leaf diversity of Persian oak trees in relation to habitat conditions and environmental stresses in Mellah Siah forests of Ilam. Two forest habitats were selected on the northern and southern slop...
متن کاملApplication of Random Amplified Microsatellite Polymorphism (RAMP) in Prunus Characterization and Mapping
Random amplified microsatellite polymorphism (RAMP) is a PCR-based marker which uses a combination of two classes of markers: Simple sequence repeat (SSR) and Random amplified DNA polymorphism (RAPD) markers. RAMP has been demonstrated to be a potentially valuable molecular marker for the study of genetic relationships in cultivated plant species. The objective of this study was to optimize the...
متن کاملRegular Leaf Languages and (non-) Regular Tree Shapes
We investigate the power of regular leaf languages with respect to three diierent tree shapes: the rst one is the case of arbitrary (and thus potentially non-regular) computation trees; the second one is the case of balanced computation trees (these trees are initial segments of full binary trees); and the third one is the case of full binary computation trees. It is known that the class charac...
