چکیده

We report the first successful measurement (with HST/WFPC2) of a significant proper motion for a m V ∼ 25 object which we had proposed as the optical counterpart of the radio pulsar PSR B0656+14. The yearly displacement of 43±2 mas is highly significant and, while in agreement with early, rougher, radio measurements , stands out for its vastly improved accuracy. Together with the report of a possible optical pulsation (Shearer et al. 1998), we regard this result as the final proof of the optical identification of PSR B0656+14.

HST observations have contributed significantly to our knowledge on the behaviour of Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) as optical emitters. First, HST has been instrumental both to discover new optical counterparts (PSR B1055-52, PSR B1929+10, PSR B0950+08) and to confirm proposed identifications (PSR B0656+14). Second, HST multicolor photometry provided useful information to characterize the optic...

Subaru optical observations of the old pulsar PSR B 0950 + 08 ⋆

We report the B band optical observations of an old (τ ∼ 17.5 Myr) radiopulsar PSR B0950+08 obtained with the Suprime-Cam at the Subaru telescope. We detected a faint object, B=27. 07±0.16. Within our astrometrical accuracy it coincides with the radio position of the pulsar and with the object detected earlier by Pavlov et al. (1996) in UV with the HST/FOC/F130LP. The positional coincidence and...

Pulsar Psr B0656+14, the Monogem Ring, and the Origin of the ‘knee’ in the Primary Cosmic Ray Spectrum

The Monogem ring is a bright, diffuse, 25◦-diameter supernova remnant easily visible in soft X-ray images of the sky. Projected within the ring is a young radio pulsar, PSR B0656+14. An association between the remnant and pulsar has been considered, but was seemingly ruled out by the direction and magnitude of the pulsar proper motion and by a distance estimate that placed the pulsar twice as f...

Radius & Distance Estimates of the Isolated Neutron Stars Geminga & PSR B0656+14 using Optical Photometry

Integrated ground-based and HST optical studies of isolated neutron stars have provided important independent datasets in the determination of emission activity, particularly in the fitting of anticipated RayleighJeans extrapolations from EUV/soft X-ray datasets, despite their intrinsic faintness. Differentiation of the pulsed and unpulsed fluxes and consequently of the nonthermal and thermal m...
