چکیده

The objective of this study is to quantify and understand the effectiveness of a hexavalent chrome replacement ion to inhibit environmentally assisted fatigue crack propagation (EFCP) in high strength aluminum alloys. Because of dynamic-cyclic stress (or strain) loading, fatigue degradation occurs at stress levels considerably lower than the tensile or yield strength; degradation is exacerbated when paired with a corrosive environment. Because CrO4 is carcinogenic and the hexavalent ionic state is not produced by oxidation of a metallic film in service, necessary for a “smart-coating” damage mitigation strategy, an effective replacement must be identified. Addition of molybdate (MoO4) to bulk-low chloride solution effectively inhibits EFCP in peak aged 7075, an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy; comparable to that of CrO4. The effectiveness of inhibition depends strongly on loading variables: ∆K (stress intensity maximum – stress intensity minimum), R (stress intensity ratio), and loading frequency as explained qualitatively by mechanical instability of a crack tip passive film that hinders production and uptake of embrittling hydrogen. For low R loading only, the critical loading frequency below which film stability and inhibition occur increases with increasing inhibitor concentration. Molybdate could be a beneficial replacement for chromate and a candidate for inhibitor release from a coating.

Experimental Investigation and Numerical Prediction of Fatigue Life in Force Fitted Fastener Holes

In this paper, the effect of interference fit on fatigue life of holed plate of mechanical joints was investigated experimentally. Fatigue tests were carried out on the holed specimens of Al-alloy 7075-T6 alloy. The interference fit process consists of force fitting a fastener into the hole with a negative clearance (diameter of the fastener is larger than of the hole) that produces beneficial ...

Stochastic modeling of fatigue crack propagation

This paper presents a stochastic model of fatigue-induced crack propagation in metallic materials. The crack growth rate predicted by the model is guaranteed to be non-negative. The model structure is built upon the underlying principle of Karhunen±Lo eve expansion and does not require solutions of stochastic di€erential equations in either Wiener integral or Itô integral setting. As such this ...

Surface Characterizations of Fretting Fatigue Damage in Aluminum Alloy 7075-T6 Clamped Joints: The Beneficial Role of Ni–P Coatings

This paper aims to characterize the surface damage as a consequence of fretting fatigue in aluminum alloy 7075-T6 plates in double-lap bolted joints through XRD, surface profilometry, and SEM analyses. The main focus was on the surface roughness and chemical phase composition of the damaged zone along with the identification of fretting fatigue crack initiations over the surface of the material...

CORROSION FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION AND INHIBITION IN Al-Zn-Mg-Cu VS Al-Cu-Mg/Li ALLOYS

Age-hardenable aluminum alloys used in aerospace structures are susceptible to environment assisted fatigue crack propagation (EFCP), limiting component durability and safety. The objective is to quantitatively understand EFCP and its inhibition for important aerospace alloys: 7075-T651 (Al-Zn-Cu-Mg), C433-T3 (Al-Cu-Mg), and C47A-T86 (AlCu-Li). EFCP is understood through the hydrogen embrittlem...
