چکیده

This paper investigates a hybrid wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) multiple access protocol combining the advantages of preallocation and reservation-based schemes using a subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) technique for passive double star optical networks. We include a node-grouping scheme in the proposed protocol to increase channel utilization and to reduce sensitivity to queueing delay time and propagation delay time. All nodes in a network are connected through passive star sub-hub forming multiple groups, and the groups are then connected through a central passive star hub resulting in a passive double star network. Each group is pre-assigned a WDM channel as its home channel, and a specific SCM channel identifies each node. In the proposed protocol, the frame is divided into slots corresponding to the number of groups, not the number of nodes. The reduced number of slots results in reduction of queueing delay time. Furthermore, additional reduction in the propagation delay time of the control packets is achieved by limiting the propagation paths of the control packets to the roundtrip between source nodes and sub-hub in a double star network. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Communication Protocols for SCM-WDM Networks

Subcarrier wavelength-division multiaccess (SCM-WDM) networks have many features, such as high system capacity, flexible packet switching access and very fast tuning speed of RF local-oscillator, etc. Though, generally speaking, existing protocols for WDMA networks can be applied to SCM-WDM networks, the transmission efficiency in terms of packet delay and network throughput is low, since an op...

Dynamic Interleaved Slotted ALOHA: A Multiple Access Protocol for Wavelength Division Multiplexed Photonic Networks

This paper introduces a preallocation-based multiple access protocol for wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) optically interconnected passive star-coupled networks. The objective is to combine the strengths of two other preallocation-based strategies, interleaved slotted ALOHA (I-SA) and interleaved time division multiple access with multiple buffers (I-TDMA*), while minimizing their inherent...

A Collision-Free MAC Protocol for Optical Star LANs

A new multiple access protocol is developed for optical local area networks based on a passive star topology. The protocol uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and combines the advantages of both random-access and scheduled-access sharing schemes, e.g., fixed pre-assigned TDMA and WDM, into a protocol that is highly bandwidth-efficient. No central control is required among users, and th...

Acknowledgement techniques of random access based media access protocols for a WDM photonic environment

This paper evaluates acknowledgment schemes for random access based media access protocols for star-coupled WDM networks. Each node requires a fast wavelength tunable transmitter and a slow/fixed receiver. The multiple, multi-access channels are pre-allocated to the nodes for data reception. Each data packet has to be acknowledged by the destination node to indicate successful transmission sinc...
