The Mass of the Convective Zone in FGK Main Sequence Stars and the Effect of Accreted Planetary Material on Apparent Metallicity Determinations
نویسندگان
چکیده
The mass of the outer convective zone in FGK main sequence stars decreases dramatically with stellar mass. Therefore, any contamination of a star’s atmosphere by accreted planetary material should affect hotter stars much more than cool stars. If recent suggestions that high metal abundances in stars with planets are caused by planetesimal accretion are correct, then metallicity enhancements in earlier-type stars with planets should be very pronounced. No such trend is seen, however. Subject headings: stars: abundances — stars: interiors

0 Stellar Pollution in the Solar Neighborhood
We study spectroscopically determined iron abundances of 642 solar-type stars to search for the signature of accreted iron-rich material. We find that the metallicity [Fe/H] of a subset of 466 main sequence stars, when plotted as a function of stellar mass, mimics the pattern seen in lithium abundances in open clusters. Using Monte Carlo models we find that, on average, these stars have accrete...
متن کاملPossible Stellar Metallicity Enhancements from the Accretion of Planets
A number of recently discovered extrasolar planet candidates have surprisingly small orbits, which may indicate that considerable orbital migration takes place in protoplanetary systems. A natural consequence of orbital migration is for a series of planets to be accreted, destroyed, and then thoroughly mixed into the convective envelope of the central star. We study the ramifications of planet ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF COSMIONS ON THE STABILITY OF MAIN SEQUENCE STELLAR CORES
We have studied the effect of hypothetical Cosmions on the core stability of main sequence stars (of populations I and II). Cosmions, with a mass of 4-10 Gev/c2 and a scattering cross section with nucleons of approximately 10-36 cm2 could prevail in transporting heat in the stellar cores. Raby [17] showed the existence of a local thermal instability caused by the presence of Cosmions in the sol...
متن کاملExtent of pollution in planet-bearing stars
Search for planets around main-sequence stars more massive than the Sun is hindered by their hot and rapidly spinning atmospheres. This obstacle has been sidestepped by radial-velocity surveys of those stars on their post-main-sequence evolutionary track (G sub-giant and giant stars). Preliminary observational findings suggest a deficiency of short-period hot Jupiters around the observed post m...
متن کاملDoctoral Dissertation Proposal Planets around Cool Stars: A Spectroscopic and Photometric Study of M Dwarfs and their Planets
I propose to carry out a systematic investigation of planet harboring M dwarfs. Specifically, over the course of my thesis I will: i) develop and refine a new highprecision method of sub-millimagnitude “snapshot” photometry to help discover and investigate more transiting planets; ii) apply this method to differential spectroscopy; iii) calibrate existing M dwarf metallicity estimates with FGK ...
