Nevo O, Soustiel JF, Thaler I. Cerebral blood flow is increased during controlled ovarian stimulation. Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 294: H3265–H3269, 2007. First published October 26, 2007; doi:10.1152/ajpheart.00633.2007.—Estrogen appears to enhance cerebral blood flow (CBF). An association between CBF and physiologically altered hormonal levels due to menstrual cycle, menopause, or exogenous manipulations such as ovariectomy or hormone replacement therapy has been demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between ovarian stimulation and CBF in vivo by measuring blood flow in the internal carotid artery (ICA) after pituitary suppression and during controlled ovarian stimulation in women undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment cycles. ICA volume flows were measured by angle-independent dual-beam ultrasound Doppler in 12 women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation. Measurements were performed after pituitary/ovarian suppression, in the late follicular phase, and at midluteal phase. Blood flow in the ICA increased by 22.2% and 32% in the late follicular and midluteal phases compared with the respective values obtained during ovarian suppression (P 0.0005 and P 0.0001, respectively). There was a significant correlation between increments in estrogen levels and increments in CBF when the late follicular phase was compared with the ovarian suppression period (r 0.8, P 0.001). Mean blood flow velocity significantly increased (by 15.7% and 16.9%, respectively) and cerebral vascular resistance significantly decreased (by 17.6% and 26.5%) during the late follicular and midluteal phases compared with respective measures during ovarian suppression. There was a significant correlation between an increase in estrogen levels and a decrease in cerebral vascular resistance when the late follicular phase was compared with the ovarian suppression period (r 0.6, P 0.05). These changes imply sex hormone-associated intracranial vasodilation leading to increased CBF during controlled ovarian stimulation.

متن کاملRenal and Hepatic Functions After a Week of Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation During In Vitro Fertilization Cycles
Background One the main aspects of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle is to avoid any possible systemic damage to women undergoing to a controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH). The aim of this work is to evaluate renal and hepatic function blood tests in patients undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation during IVF cycles. MaterialsAndMethods All patients received a long stimulation p...
متن کاملTranscranial doppler sonography diagnostic value for the cerebral flow velocity changes in the interictal phase of classic migraine
Background: An imbalance of the cerebrovascular response during functional activation of the brain has been postulated as a factor in the pathophysiology of migraine. The purpose of this study was to determine the transcranial doppler sonography (TDS) diagnostic value for the cerebral flow velocity changes in the interictal phase of classic migraine. Methods: This study was carried out on 46 pa...

THE FIFTH AMERICAN PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY CONFERENCE entitled, Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolic Diseases: Physiology and Gender Conference, is taking place in Annapolis, MD, on November 17-20, 2015. The timing of this conference is especially opportune since the number of papers published on sex and gender differences in physiology and pathophysiology is exploding, and the National Institutes...
متن کاملA Review on 17-β estradiol a Potent Therapeutic Factor of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy
Type 2 diabetes causes structural and functional changes in the myocardium, which is called cardiomyopathy. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a distinct primary disorder process, independent of coronary artery disease, which leads to heart failure in diabetic patients. Also, DCM is a multifaceted disorder that is one of the leading causes of death in elderly and postmenopausal women. Menopause i...
