چکیده

We present the results of a deep K-band imaging study which reveals the host galaxies around a sample of 14 luminous radio-quiet quasars. The K-band images, obtained at UKIRT, are of sufficient quality to allow accurate modelling of the underlying host galaxy. Initially, the basic structure of the hosts is revealed using a modified Clean deconvolution routine optimised for this analysis. Two of the quasars are shown to have host galaxies with violently disturbed morphologies which cannot be modelled by smooth elliptical profiles. For the remainder of our sample, 2D models of the host and nuclear component are fitted to the images using the χ 2 statistic to determine goodness of fit. Host galaxies are detected around all of the quasars. The reliability of the modelling is extensively tested, and we find the host luminosity to be well constrained for 9 quasars. The derived average K-band absolute K-corrected host galaxy magnitude for these luminous radio-quiet quasars is M K = −25.15 ± 0.04, slightly more luminous than an L * galaxy. The spread of derived host galaxy luminosities is small, although the spread of nuclear-to-host ratios is not. These host luminosities are shown to be comparable to those derived from samples of quasars of lower total luminosity and we conclude that there is no correlation between host and nuclear luminosity for these quasars. Nuclear-to-host ratios break the lower limit previously suggested from studies of lower nuclear luminosity quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Morphologies are less certain but, on the scales probed by these images, some hosts appear to be dominated by spheroids but others appear to have disc-dominated profiles.

The Host Galaxies of Three Radio-loud Quasars: 3c 48, 3c 345, and B2 1425]2671 Sofia Kirhakos

Observations with the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera-2 of the Hubble Space T elescope are presented for three radio-loud quasars : 3C 48 (z\ 0.367), B2 1425]267 (z\ 0.366), and 3C 345 (z\ 0.594). All three quasars have luminous (D4 ] L*) galaxies as hosts, which are either elliptical (B2 1425]267 and 3C345) or interacting (3C 48), and all hosts are 0.5È1.0 mag bluer in V [I than other galaxies wit...

Near - infrared imaging of the host galaxies of three radio – loud quasars at z ∼ 1

We present high spatial resolution near–infrared H-band (1.65 μm) images, taken with ISAAC on UT1 of ESO VLT, of three radio-loud quasars at z∼1.5, as a pilot study for imaging of a larger sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. We are able to clearly detect the host galaxy in two quasars (PKS 0000-177 and PKS 0348-120) and marginally in the third (PKS 0402...

Near-infrared Adaptive Optics Imaging of High-redshift Quasars

The properties of high-redshift quasar host galaxies are studied in order to investigate the connection between galaxy evolution, nuclear activity, and the formation of supermassive black holes. We combine new near-IR observations of three high-redshift quasars (2 < z < 3), obtained at the ESOVery Large Telescope equipped with adaptive optics, with selected data from the literature. For the thr...

Massive Black Holes at High Redshifts

Black holes with masses Mbh ∼ 10M⊙ dominate the accretion history of the Universe. These black hole masses are typical of those found in radio-selected galaxies today, suggesting that the giant elliptical hosts of low redshift radio galaxies were the hosts of powerful, mostly radio-quiet, quasars in the high redshift Universe. The reason that all radio galaxies are found in such hosts may be th...
