The DRIFT Project: Searching for WIMPS with a Directional Detector
نویسنده
چکیده
A low pressure time projection chamber for the detection of WIMPs is discussed. Discrimination against Compton electron background in such a device should be very good, and directional information about the recoil atoms would be obtainable. If a full 3-D reconstruction of the recoil tracks can be achieved, Monte Carlo studies indicate that a WIMP signal could be identified with high confidence from as few as 30 detected WIMP-nucleus scattering events. To identify a WIMP signal, conventional searches rely mainly on searching for an annual modulation in the rate of nuclear recoils in the detector. This arises from the varying combined velocity vectors of the Earth’s orbital motion and the Galactic rotation [1]. Because this is only a 5% effect, and existing detectors generally have a large background from Compton electrons, many WIMP-nucleus scattering events are needed to identify a WIMP signal statistically. Therefore emphasis has mainly been placed on 1 E-mail: [email protected]

Directional detection of Dark Matter
Direct detection of WIMPs is key to understand the origin and composition of Dark Matter. Among the many experimental techniques available, those providing directional information have the potential of yielding an unambiguous observation of WIMPs even in the presence of insidious backgrounds. A measurement of the distribution of arrival direction of WIMPs can also discriminate between Galactic ...
متن کاملDirectional scintillation detector for the detection of the wind of WIMPs
The quenching factor of the proton recoil in the stilbene scintillator was measured with a 252Cf neutron source and was found to be 0.1 – 0.17 in the recoil energy range between 300 keV and 3 MeV. It was found to depend on the direction of the recoil proton. The directional anisotropy of the quenching factor could be used to detect the wind of the WIMPs caused by the motion of the earth around ...
متن کاملDark Matter Search at Boulby Mine
The Boulby Dark Matter Collaboration (BDMC) is running a WIMP Dark Matter research programme in the underground laboratory of Boulby Mine. The two axes of the programme are based on (1) liquid Xenon (LXe) as the WIMP target and (2) directional detection in low pressure gas detectors. ZEPLIN-1 is a 3.1kg of LXe scintillation detector with a background discrimination based on Pulse Shape Analysis...

The Dark Matter part of the universe presumably consists of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles). The ArDM project aims at measuring signals induced by WIMPs in a liquid argon detector. A 1-ton prototype is currently developed with the goal of demonstrating the feasibility of such a direct detection experiment with large target mass. The technical design of the detector aims at independ...
