Space Situational Awareness - Protecting Assets in Space from Orbital Debris (a RMIT University perspective on the Space Environment Management CRC)

چکیده
Services delivered from satellites in the near-Earth space environment are under threat from orbiting space debris from over 50 years of space operations. Computational modelling studies have shown that even under optimistic mitigation scenarios remediation is necessary to curb the growth. In fact, certain regions of the lowEarth orbit are already demonstrating a collisional cascading instability. In these regions, even if mitigation scenarios are assumed and no future launches occur, there is still a growth experienced in the number of debris objects. This paper introduces the newly established multi-million-dollar Space Environment Management Cooperative Research Centre – an Australian national research centre funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Industry. The overall goal of the Centre is to build a cost-effective capability for space debris remediation using photon pressure delivered by ground-based lasers to move debris objects for collision avoidance. The research and development areas set out to achieve the goals are outlined and recent related research progress from the RMIT SPACE Research Centre perspective is reported.

Orbital Space Environment and Space Situational Awareness Domain Ontology
As the population of satellites and other orbital objects in the space environment increases, the potential for collisions and orbital debris formation does as well. Existing sensors observe much of the night sky, gathering various sorts of data, but no space actor has full coverage of the orbital space environment. Although some nations have data-sharing agreements, not all exchanged data is r...

متن کاملOntology Architectures for the Orbital Space Environment and Space Situational Awareness Domain
This paper applies some ontology architectures to the space domain, specifically the orbital and near-earth space environment and the space situational awareness domain. I briefly summarize local, single and hybrid ontology architectures, and offer potential space ontology architectures for each by showing how actual space data sources and space organizations would be involved.

Space capabilities derived from the geosynchronous orbit (GEO) are unique and difficult to replicate in other orbital regions. Therefore, a premium is placed on the preservation of the GEO. An accurate understanding of the efficacy of debris mitigation measures is essential. Evidence seems to indicate retired systems in disposal orbits are shedding materials that transit the GEO region. In addi...

Since geographical space is a subjective space, due to the difference in the spatial cognation of different people, its perception can be changed from person to person. This cognation depends on the person's experiences of the environment and can be taught. On the other hand, the best age for this training is childhood. But this issue has received less attention. Therefore, the aim of this stud...
