How dense does parton matter get in Pb + Pb Collisions at the CERN SPS ?
We examine the qualitative features of parton production through materialization in heavy-ion collisions within perturbative QCD, and estimate the magnitude of the resulting parton density created during the early stage of the collisions. The implications for " anomalous " J/ψ suppression observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS are discussed. We argue that the A-dependence of absorption of...
متن کاملAnomalous J/ψ suppression and charmonium dissociation cross sections
We study J/ψ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at CERN-SPS energies in hadronic matter with energyand temperature-dependent charmonium dissociation cross sections calculated in the quark-interchange model of Barnes and Swanson. We find that the variation of J/ψ survival probability from peripheral to central collisions can be explained as induced by hadronic matter absorption in central collision...
متن کاملContribution of intermediate stage gluons to J/Ψ suppression in Lead-Lead collisions at 158AGeV
We point out that dissociation of J/Ψ by partons (mostly gluons) present in the intermediate stage of heavy-ion collisions can explain J/Ψ suppression observed recently by the NA-50 Collaboration at the CERN-SPS in Pb-Pb interactions. Suppression by intermediate stage gluons represents an additional multiplicative factor to that given by GerschelHüfner mechanism. The agreement with data on J/Ψ ...
متن کاملHigh-mass dimuon resonances in Pb-Pb collisions at 5.5 TeV in CMS
The measurement of the charmonium (J/ψ, ψ′) and bottomonium (Υ, Υ′, Υ′′) resonances and Z boson in nucleus-nucleus collisions provides crucial information on high density QCD matter. The observation of anomalous suppression of J/ψ at the CERN-SPS and RHIC is well established but the clarification of some important questions requires equivalent studies of the Υ family, only possible at LHC energ...
متن کاملStatistical coalescence model of J/ψ production at the SPS and RHIC
A recently developed statistical coalescence model of the J/ψ production is presented. The NA50 data on the J/ψ suppression pattern and the transverse mass spectra in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS are analyzed. The model predictions for the RHIC energies are formulated. The measurements of J/ψ in Au+Au collisions at RHIC are crucial for disentangling the different scenarios of charmonia formation.
متن کاملIs There Anomalous J/ψ Suppression in Present-day Heavy-ion Collisions?
We re-analyse the data on J/ψ cross sections for proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained by the CERN experiments NA38, NA51 and NA50. Our systematic analysis of error propagation shows that the no anomalous suppression of J/ψ in Pb-Pb collisions can be substantiated at 95% confidence limit. The significance of the NA50 result would be enhanced by more precise p-A data on J/ψ cros...
