THE INFLUENCE OF VITAMIN E DEFICIENCY ON THE METABOLISM OF SODIUM FORMATE-Cl4 AND GLYCINE-l-Cl4 BY THE RABBIT*

چکیده
Several recent, reports from this laboratory have implicated vitamin E in the metabolism of the nucleic acids. It was shown that vitamin E-deficient rabbits excrete extra quantities of allantoin (1) and that the livers from such animals exhibit greatly increased xanthine oxidase activities (2). Finally it haa been shown that vitamin E deprivation in the rat, leads to an increased incorporation of formate into nucleic acids (3). The combined results of these experiments have been interpreted to indicate that the turnover rate of nucleic acids is increased in vitamin E deficiency. The present report is concerned with the influence of vitamin E deficiency on the metabolism of glycine and formate by the rabbit. The results indicate that vitamin E may be somewhat specifically concerned with formate metabolism.

متن کاملThe rôle of polyglutamyl pteridine coenzymes in serine metabolism. I. Cofactor requirements in the conversion of serine to glycine.
It has been previously reported that serine is converted to alanine in Clostridium HF, and that formate is important in the metabolism of this organism (1). When grown in the presence of formate-C14, the major nonvolatile C*4-containing component in the culture medium is alanine.’ Valine is also similarly labeled, whereas aspartic and glutamic acids are not. It was therefore of interest to obse...
متن کاملStudies on the precursors of the methyl groups of choline in rat liver.
Since the original demonstrations by du Vigneaud et al. (l-4) that the methyl group of labeled methionine can be transferred intact to choline, considerable evidence has accumulated suggesting that this is not the only source of choline methyl groups. It was shown unequivocally that choline methyl groups can be synthesized de novo in germ-free rats receiving a diet devoid of methyl donors (5). ...
متن کاملThe metabolism of glycine by folic acid-deficient chick liver homogenates.
Recent work has made it clear that folic acid is intimately concerned in glycine metabolism. It was shown that a deficiency of glycine produced by feeding sodium benzoate (1) was partially prevented by this vitamin. Likewise, growth in rats fed toxic levels of glycine ir improved by folic acid (2, 3). Holland and Meinke (4) have found that both glycine and folic acid seem to improve the ability...
متن کاملEffect of glucose and various nucleosides on purine synthesis by Ehrlich ascites tumor cells in vitro.
The pattern of formate-Cl4 incorporation by Ehrlich ascites tumor cells has been found to be remarkably different in vitro from the pattern of incorporation in vivo (3-5). Thus, after incubation of cells with formate-Cl4 in vitro, the specific activity of the DNA thymine was 10 to 30 times higher than that of the DNA purines. In contrast, after incorporation of formateCl4 by these cells in viva...
