چکیده
Response to reviewers: The reviewers make excellent suggestions and comments that substantially improve the text. For the most part we modify the text to better reflect their comments. There are a few exceptions, where we do not do as suggested, in which case we explain why we did not. Comments by Reviewer # 1 (Ron Miller) “There seem to be four main conclusions. First, surface extinction, where light attenuation is measured within air at the surface, is a better indicator of local aerosol sources than column optical thickness, where attenuation is measured vertically across the entire column. This is because column extinction includes aerosols high overhead that

Global trends in visibility: implications for dust sources
There is a large uncertainty in the relative roles of human land use, climate change and carbon dioxide fertilization in changing desert dust source strength over the past 100 years, and the overall sign of human impacts on dust is not known. We used visibility data from meteorological stations in dusty regions to assess the anthropogenic impact on long term trends in desert dust emissions. We ...
متن کاملInteractive comment on “Physical and chemical properties of deposited airborne particulates over the Arabian Red Sea coastal plain” by Johann Engelbrecht et al
The paper presents and analyzes the mineralogical, physical and chemical composition of dust deposited samples at six sites on the KAUST campus. KAUST is located on the Red sea coastal plain of Saudi Arabia. Monthly samples were collected between December 2014 and December 2015. The monthly deposition trends were compared to visibility and sun photometric measurements and to previous mineralogi...
متن کاملObserved 20th century desert dust variability: impact on climate and biogeochemistry
Desert dust perturbs climate by directly and indirectly interacting with incoming solar and outgoing long wave radiation, thereby changing precipitation and temperature, in addition to modifying ocean and land biogeochemistry. While we know that desert dust is sensitive to perturbations in climate and human land use, previous studies have been unable to determine whether humans were increasing ...
متن کاملEuropeanglacial dust deposits: Geochemical constraints on atmospheric dust cycle modeling
For a long time global paleodust numerical simulations have greatly underestimated dust sources other than modern deserts. Recent modeling experiments incorporating glaciogenic sources of dust have positively improved the agreement between model and paleodust data. This highlights the importance of accurately representing all areas potentially subjected to deflation during an investigated inter...
