High-density liquid-crystalline azobenzene polymer brush attained by surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization.

High-density polynorbornene azobenzene liquid-crystalline brushes are synthesized on quartz substrates by surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (SI-ROMP) using Grubbs third-generation catalyst. The grafting process is controlled over the thickness of the brush from a solid-supported substrate in a stoichiometric manner. A highly ordered liquid-crystal arrangement was formed f...

Polymer brushes via surface-initiated polymerizations.

Polymer brushes produced by controlled surface-initiated polymerization provide a route to surfaces coated with well-defined thin polymer films that are covalently bound to the substrate. All of the major controlled polymerization techniques have been applied to the synthesis of polymer brushes and examples of each are presented here. Many examples of brush synthesis in the literature have used...

Antibacterial surfaces based on polymer brushes: investigation on the influence of brush properties on antimicrobial peptide immobilization and antimicrobial activity.

Primary amine containing copolymer, poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-N-(3-aminopropyl)methacrylamide hydrochloride) (poly(DMA-co-APMA)), brushes were synthesized on Ti surface by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) in aqueous conditions. A series of poly(DMA-co-APMA) copolymer brushes on titanium (Ti) surface with different molecular weights, thicknesses, compositions...

Supramolecular surface adhesion mediated by azobenzene polymer brushes.

Surface immobilised polymer brushes containing azobenzene units were prepared using a combination of microcontact chemistry and surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerisation (SI-ATRP). These brushes were investigated using AFM, XPS and UV/vis spectroscopy. It was shown that two surfaces bearing azobenzene brushes can be glued together in the presence of a β-cyclodextrin polymer and hol...

Surface-initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization and Solution Intercalation Methods for Preparation of Cellulose-G-PS-G-PAN/MMT Bionanocomposite

Cellulose was modified by polystyrene (PS) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via free radical and living radical polymerization, and then cellulose was used as the matrix in the preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposite, through a solution intercalation method. For this purpose, first, the graft polymerization of styrene (St) onto cellulose fibers was performed by using suspension polymerization and ...
