Semantic Integration of Authoritative and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) using Ontologies
نویسنده
چکیده
Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) projects such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) have been growing in users and edits in the past few years, resulting in more accurate, complete and up-to-date datasets. As a result, governments are now interested in VGI as a source of information that could help to improve their own datasets. Integrating geographic information requires solving semantic heterogeneity in a way that allows the identification of features in different datasets representing the same real phenomena. This paper presents a method that uses ontologies for identifying sets of homologous features in VGI and authoritative geographic sources. The method is based on two steps. First, a domain ontology is used as a common knowledge among datasets. Second, direct mapping from the datasets to the domain ontology is done, resulting in new datasets using the same vocabulary.

Validation of Volunteered Geographic Information Landuse Change Using Satellite Imagery
Land use change monitoring is one of the main concerns of managers and urban planners due to human activities and unbalanced physical development in urban areas. In this paper, a combination of remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information was used to assess the quality of volunteered geographic information on land use and land cover changes monitoring. For this purpose, the ORBVIE...
متن کاملUsing Osm, Geo-tagged Flickr Photos and Authoritative Data: a Quality Perspective
The appearance of OpenStreetMap (OSM) in 2004 sparked a phenomenon known as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). Today, VGI comes in many flavours (e.g. toponyms, GPS tracks, geo-tagged photos, micro-blogging or complete topographic maps) and from various sources. One subject that has attracted research interest from the early days of VGI is how good such datasets are and how to combine th...
متن کاملComputing the semantic similarity of geographic terms using volunteered lexical definitions
Volunteered geographic information (VGI) is generated by heterogenous ‘information communities’ that co-operate to produce reusable units of geographic knowledge. A consensual lexicon is a key factor to enable this open production model. Lexical definitions help demarcate the boundaries of terms, forming a thin semantic ground on which knowledge can travel. In VGI, lexical definitions often app...
متن کاملUsing Geometric Properties to Evaluate Possible Integration of Authoritative and Volunteered Geographic Information
The assessment of data quality from different sources can be considered as a key challenge in supporting effective geospatial data integration and promoting collaboration in mapping projects. This paper presents a methodology for assessing positional and shape quality for authoritative large-scale data, such as Ordnance Survey (OS) UK data and General Directorate for Survey (GDS) Iraq data, and...
متن کاملUsing OSM for LBS – an analysis of changes to attributes of spatial objects
The quality of volunteered and crowd-sourced spatial data is not in most cases audited prior to being made accessible to end-users. Studies have shown that this spatial data varies significantly in terms of its geometric quality, its semantic consistency, in terms of its comprehensiveness of coverage and in terms of its currency. Subsequently it often compares poorly with the authoritative data...
