Taxicab Regulation in Japan

چکیده
This paper proposes a model of a cruising taxicab industry under laissez faire pricing and free entry, and compares it with alternative regimes including collusive fare setting, collusive restrictions on entry, or both. In the model, under laissez faire, prices are determined by Nash bargaining with complete information and lie above marginal costs. Under laissez faire pricing and free entry the number of vacant cabs need not be efficient and could be either higher than optimal or less depending upon the relative bargaining power of individual cabs and potential customers. Under collusive control of entry, the number of vacant cabs will be set at the efficient level given the prices, which if set collusively will be above the laissez faire prices. These findings shed new light on the political success of cartelizing regulation of the cruising taxicab industry such as that observed in Japan. JEL classifications D40, L43, L51 and L92.

A TAXICAB VERSION OF A TRIANGLE' S APOLLONIUS CIRCLE
One of the most famous problems of classical geometry is the Apollonius' problem asks construction of a circle which is tangent to three given objects. These objects are usually taken as points, lines, and circles. This well known problem was posed by Apollonius of Perga ( about 262 - 190 B.C.) who was a Greek mathematician known as the great geometer of ancient times after Euclid and Archimede...
متن کاملRoles of Renin-Angiotensin System in the Regulation of Prostate Cancer Bone Metastasis: A Critical Review
Mestastatic prostate cancer cells (MPCCs) frequently metastasize to bone, which is a “favorite soil” for colonization and proliferation of MPCCs. Prostate cancer bone mestastasis is tightly associated with tumor-induced bone lesions, most commonly caused from the etiological imbalance between osteoblastic bone formation and osteoclastic bone resorption, and from the anti-tumor immune response. ...
متن کاملWhat is the Value of Taxicab(6)?
For almost 350 years it was known that 1729 is the smallest integer which can be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways. Motivated by a famous story involving Hardy and Ramanujan, a class of numbers called Taxicab Numbers has been defined: Taxicab(k, j, n) is the smallest number which can be expressed as the sum of j kth powers in n different ways. So, Taxicab(3, 2, 2)...
متن کاملMinimum Requirements for Taxicab Security Cameras*
PROBLEM The homicide rate of taxicab-industry is 20 times greater than that of all workers. A NIOSH study showed that cities with taxicab-security cameras experienced significant reduction in taxicab driver homicides. METHODS Minimum technical requirements and a standard test protocol for taxicab-security cameras for effective taxicab-facial identification were determined. The study took more...
متن کاملWhat Is the Value of Taxicab(6)? An Update
The famous story of the number 1729, the smallest integer which can be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways, motivated the introduction of Taxicab Numbers. The smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in n different ways is called Taxicab(n). So, Taxicab(2) = 1729. Further on, Taxicab(5) = 48988659276962496. Computing Taxicab(n) is challenging and interest...
