Welding Fume and Gas Exposure

چکیده

A recent $1 million award by an Illinois jury to a welder was the first plaintiff victory in a welding rod failure-to-warn suit and many similar cases are expected to follow. In the case of Elam v. AO Smith et. al., the jury concluded that the manganese in welding fumes caused a 65-year old worker to develop a neurological disorder similar to Parkinson’s disease (i.e., Manganism). Since there are more than 500,000 workers employed in welding and related occupations in the U.S. (Bureau of Labor Statistics) and another 200,000 welders or more who are retired, there is a potential pool of more 700,000 who are (or previously have) been exposed to welding fumes on a daily basis.

Personal Exposure among Welders and Non-welders

The objective of this study was to characterize personal exposures to welding-related metals and gases for production welders and non-welders in a large manufacturing facility. Welding fume metals and irritant gases nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) were sampled for thirty-eight workers. Personal exposure air samples for welding fume metals were collected on 37 mm open face cassettes and ni...

Exposure to Inhalable, Respirable, and Ultrafine Particles in Welding Fume

This investigation aims to explore determinants of exposure to particle size-specific welding fume. Area sampling of ultrafine particles (UFP) was performed at 33 worksites in parallel with the collection of respirable particles. Personal sampling of respirable and inhalable particles was carried out in the breathing zone of 241 welders. Median mass concentrations were 2.48 mg m(-3) for inhalab...

Characterization of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding Fume Generated by Apprentice Welders

Tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) represents one of the most widely used metal joining processes in industry. Its propensity to generate a greater portion of welding fume particles at the nanoscale poses a potential occupational health hazard for workers. However, current literature lacks comprehensive characterization of TIG welding fume particles. Even less is known about welding fumes generat...

Effect of short-term stainless steel welding fume inhalation exposure on lung inflammation, injury, and defense responses in rats.

Many welders have experienced bronchitis, metal fume fever, lung function changes, and an increase in the incidence of lung infection. Questions remain regarding the possible mechanisms associated with the potential pulmonary effects of welding fume exposure. The objective was to assess the early effects of stainless steel (SS) welding fume inhalation on lung injury, inflammation, and defense r...

Comparison of Welding Fumes Exposure during Standing and Sitting Welder’s Position

Experimental study was conducted to assess personal welding fumes exposure toward welders during an aluminum metal inert gas (MIG) process. The welding process was carried out by a welding machine attached to a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) workbench. A dummy welder was used to replicate welder during welding works and was attached with sampling pumps and filter cassettes for welding fumes s...

Sponsored by the American Welding Society and the Welding Research Council Chemical Analysis of Welding Fume Particles

Welding fume contains elements that, in their pure forms, can be hazardous to worker health if inhaled or ingested. Therefore, the chemical composition of welding fume must be examined when considering fume toxicity. Various chemical analysis techniques are presented and their applicability to airborne particles is described. Knowledge of particle size is important because a given characterizat...
