Situation Awareness-oriented Design (saod) and the Cdc Biophusion Center

Effective monitoring and accurate detection of potential disease outbreaks is critically dependent upon the situation awareness (SA) of health professionals. Quick and precise identification of an outbreak is needed to prevent the disease from spreading. Biosurveillance systems that focus on supporting SA may help improve the ability of health professionals to detect outbreaks and make decisions. Challenges that exist for these systems must first be overcome through effective design. This paper describes a case study using the SA-oriented design (SAOD) approach for SA requirements analyses and design to create a system for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) BioPHusion Center. Our approach will be discussed within the context of a theoretical model of SA. We will conclude with a discussion of future systems directions.
