A thermal oscillation under a restorative forcing

چکیده
The authors report an interdecadal oscillation in a windand thermally-driven ocean general circulation model (OGCM). The oscillation is tantalizing in that it occursunder a relatively strong thermal damping(26.3 W m-2K-’). Examinations involving a two-dimensional OGCM, a simple thermal ‘flip-flop’ model, and a three-dimensional OGCM with and without the nonlinear effect of temperature in the state equation of sea water demonstrate that the oscillation is not driven by mechanisms such as the so-called convective oscillator, or the advective overshooting oscillator. Instead, the oscillation is associated with the propagation of modelled long Rossby-waves with westward phase velocity. It is found that the north-south basin extent of the OGCM is an important factor; a larger northsouth basin extent is conducive to the generation of thermal wind flows crucial for initiating the propagation of disturbances. The geophysical relevance of these results is discussed.

Global Forcing Number for Maximal Matchings under Graph Operations
Let $S= \{e_1,\,e_2, \ldots,\,e_m\}$ be an ordered subset of edges of a connected graph $G$. The edge $S$-representation of an edge set $M\subseteq E(G)$ with respect to $S$ is the vector $r_e(M|S) = (d_1,\,d_2,\ldots,\,d_m)$, where $d_i=1$ if $e_i\in M$ and $d_i=0$ otherwise, for each $i\in\{1,\ldots , k\}$. We say $S$ is a global forcing set for maximal matchings of $G$ if $...
متن کاملSome conditions under which slow oscillation of a sequence of fuzzy numbers follows from Ces`{a}ro summability of its generator sequence
Let $(u_n)$ be a sequence of fuzzy numbers. We recover the slow oscillation of $(u_n)$ of fuzzy numbers from the Ces`{a}ro summability of its generator sequence and some additional conditions imposed on $(u_n)$. Further, fuzzy analogues of some well known classical Tauberian theorems for Ces`{a}ro summability method are established as particular cases.
متن کاملDiagnosing Changes of Winter NAO in Response to Different Climate Forcings in a Set of Atmosphere-Only Timeslice Experiments
Changes of the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) variability in response to different climate forcings, and their possible causes, are decomposed and investigated using a set of atmosphere-only timeslice experiments forced by sea surface temperature (SST) from coupled runs. The results indicate that the effects of uniform SST warming and direct CO2 radiative forcing could enhance NAO vari...
متن کاملAcousto-Refrigerator with an Adjustable Mechanical Resonator (RESEARCH NOTE)
Thermoacoustics describes energy conversion processes, activated by interaction temperature oscillation, accompanying the pressure oscillation in a sound wave, with solid boundaries. In ordinary experience this interaction of sound and heat cannot be observed, because of the very low temperature differences, but under suitable conditions, it can be emphasized and amplified to create remarkable ...
متن کاملResponse to Comment on "The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation without a role for ocean circulation".
Zhang et al interpret the mixed-layer energy budget in models as showing that "ocean dynamics play a central role in the AMO." Here, we show that their diagnostics cannot reveal the causes of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and that their results can be explained with minimal ocean influence. Hence, we reaffirm our findings that the AMO in models can be understood primarily as the u...
