Seasonal Variations in Muon Rate with Ice-Cube

چکیده

Seasonal Variations in Muon Rate are caused by large scale changes in atmospheric conditions throughout the year. As atmospheric temperature and density vary across the seasons, so do the absorption rates of cosmic ray secondaries in the atmosphere. The IceCube neutrino detector array can track both large and small scale variations in atmospheric muon rate and daily, detailed weather data is available at the location of the detector. Depending on specific atmospheric conditions, IceCube’s 22-string atmospheric muon trigger rate varies between approximately 450 Hz and 560 Hz in winter and summer, respectively.

Observation of Seasonal Variations with the MINOS Far Detector

An observation of seasonal variations in underground muon rate, Rμ, has been performed at Soudan, MN, by the MINOS Far Detector. The four percent fluctuation seen over three years was highly correlated to the temperature variations of the upper atmosphere. The coefficient relating variations in temperature to variations in muon rate was found to be: αT = (T/Rμ)(∂Rμ/∂T ) = 0.87±0.03, which is ne...

Seasonal Variations in Ice-Front Position Controlled by Frontal Ablation at Glaciar Perito Moreno, the Southern Patagonia Icefield

The front position of calving glaciers is controlled by ice speed and frontal ablation which consists of the two processes of calving and subaqueous melting. However, the relative importance of these processes in frontal variation is difficult to assess and poorly understood, particularly for freshwater calving glaciers. To better understand the mechanism of seasonal variations involved in the ...

A simple parameterization for ice sheet ablation rate

A parameterization of monthly mean ice sheet ablation as a function only of surface air temperature and insolation is examined. By considering differences in summer climate between the present and the last ice age, it is suggested that the parameterization adequately describes long-term changes in ablation. Although significant discrepancies are found between the parameterization and the season...

Basal melt, seasonal water mass transformation, ocean current variability, and deep convection processes along the Amery Ice Shelf calving front, East Antarctica

Despite the Amery Ice Shelf (AIS) being the third largest ice shelf in Antarctica, the seasonal variability of the physical processes involved in the AIS-ocean interaction remains undocumented and a robust observational, oceanographic-based basal melt rate estimate has been lacking. Here we use year-long time series of water column temperature, salinity, and horizontal velocities measured along...

Monitoring southwest Greenland’s ice sheet melt with ambient seismic noise

The Greenland ice sheet presently accounts for ~70% of global ice sheet mass loss. Because this mass loss is associated with sea-level rise at a rate of 0.7 mm/year, the development of improved monitoring techniques to observe ongoing changes in ice sheet mass balance is of paramount concern. Spaceborne mass balance techniques are commonly used; however, they are inadequate for many purposes be...
