Induced Changes in Female Germ Cells of Drosophila. VII. Exchanges Induced in Different X Chromosome Regions after X-Raying Oocytes and Oogonia.

چکیده
OME of the earlier papers in this series (HERSKOWITZ and ABRAHAMSON 1957; S H ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 1959) were concerned with the detection of X-ray-induced exchanges in germ cells of female Drosophila melanogaster. It was found in the proximal portion of the X chromosome, i.e., the region between the right end of the chromosome and the locus of carnation, that X-ray exposure induced exchanges both in oogonia and in oocytes. In the next proximal region of the X chromosome (between carnation and forked) there was also an increase in the rate of exchanges recovered after X-raying oogonia and probably also young oocytes; however, there was no such increase after more mature oocytes were X-rayed (HERSKOWITZ 1959). In order to more fully understand the nature and distribution of the exchanges induced by X rays, it seemed desirable to investigate further the exchange responses of both proximal and distal chromosome regions. Accordingly, the present experiments were designed to detect X-rayinduced exchanges in four regions of the X chromosome-two of them proximal (the carnation-right end of chromosome segment was divided into two regions) and two distal (yellow-white, and white-split). The results are analyzed in an attempt to determine the genetic nature and the quantities of the exchanges induced in these different regions of the X at different stages in oogenesis. The bearing these results have on the mechanism of origin of X-ray-induced recessive lethal mutants in female germ cells is discussed briefly.

Viability of Female Germ-Line Cells Homozygous for Zygotic Lethals in DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER.
We have analyzed the viability of different types of X chromosomes in homozygous clones of female germ cells. The chromosomes carried viable mutations, single-cistron zygotic-lethal and semi-lethal mutations, or small (about six chromosome band) deletions. Homozygous germ-line clones were produced by recombination in females heterozygous for an X-linked, dominant, agametic female sterile. All th...
متن کاملA Spontaneous Somatic Exchange between Non-Homologous Chromosomes in Drosophila Melanogaster.
HE first kind of exchange between chromosomes to be discovered in T Drosophila was crossing over, a term which when used without qualification still stands for exchange between homologous chromatids at identical loci in the four strand stage of meiosis in the female. Spontaneous somatic crossing over has subsequently been observed resulting from exchange between homologous chromosomes of cells ...
متن کاملThe radiosensitivity of oogonia and oocytes in the chick embryo by GILLIAN
NUMEROUS recent studies have clearly shown that in mammals, the radiosensitivity of germ cells changes markedly during the course of ovarian development (e.g. Rugh & Jackson, 1958; Russell, Badgett & Saylors, 1960; Beaumont, 1961, 1962). In the rat, for instance, female germ cells undergo two periods of high radiosensitivity: the first at 15 • 5 days post coitum, and the second some 5 days post...
متن کاملInduced Changes in Female Germ Cells of Drosophila. VI. the Effect of Dehydration upon the X-Ray-Induced Frequencies of Crossover-like Exchanges and of Gross Chromosomal Rearrangements.
EHYDRATION of Drosophila melanogaster virgin females before irradiaD tion increases the frequency of mortality for eggs laid approximately the first eight days after mating (HERSKOWITZ 1957). No decision was reached from this work as to whether or not the dehydration-increased egg mortality had a genetic basis. The present experiments aimed to test whether X-ray-induced frequencies of gross chr...
متن کاملGamma ray-induced mutations in Drosophila melanogaster oocytes: the phenomenon of dose rate.
RIOR to 1958, it had been generally accepted that radiation-induced mutation IP frequencies are independent of dose rate. This was based mainly on findings for irradiated spermatozoa in Drosophila (PATTERSON 1931 ; TIMOFEEFF-RESSOVSKY and ZIMMER 1935 j RAY-CHAUDHURI 1939,1944). In 1955, HERSKOWITZ and ABRAHAMSON reported that the frequencies of sex-linked recessive lethals induced in oocytes of...
