Commentary: On Haldane's 'defense of beanbag genetics'.

چکیده

It is now almost 45 years since Haldane’s ‘Defense of beanbag genetics’ appeared, and the time is ripe for an evaluation of that defence, particularly in the light of developments over the last two decades. This deliberately provocative review is divided into four parts: first, a discussion of why Haldane felt that a defence was necessary; second, a review of what his defence actually was; third, suggestions as to what his defence should have been; and fourth, a discussion of what changes might be made to the defence had it been written now and not in 1964.

A Defense of Beanbag Genetics.

The Mendelian was apt to compare the genetic contents of a population to a bag full of colored beans. Mutation was the exchange of one kind of bean for another. This conceptualization has been referred to as ‘‘beanbag genetics’’. Work in population and developmental genetics has shown, however, that the thinking of beanbag genetics is in many ways quite misleading. To consider genes as independ...

J. B. S. Haldane, Ernst Mayr and the Beanbag genetics dispute.

Starting from the early decades of the twentieth century, evolutionary biology began to acquire mathematical overtones. This took place via the development of a set of models in which the Darwinian picture of evolution was shown to be consistent with the laws of heredity discovered by Mendel. The models, which came to be elaborated over the years, define a field of study known as population gen...

Dominance, epistasis and the genetics of postzygotic isolation.

The sterility and inviability of species hybrids can be explained by between-locus "Dobzhansky-Muller" incompatibilities: alleles that are fit on their "normal" genetic backgrounds sometimes lower fitness when brought together in hybrids. We present a model of two-locus incompatibilities that distinguishes among three types of hybrid interactions: those between heterozygous loci (H(0)), those b...

Opinion Mayr, mathematics and the study of evolution

In 1959 Ernst Mayr (Figure 1) flung down the gauntlet [1] at the feet of the three great population geneticists RA Fisher, Sewall Wright and JBS Haldane (Figure 2): “But what, precisely,” he said, “has been the contribution of this mathematical school to the evolutionary theory, if I may be permitted to ask such a provocative question?” His skepticism arose in part from the fact that the mathem...

Explaining Darwin's corollary to Haldane's rule: the role of mitonuclear interactions in asymmetric postzygotic isolation among toads.

We examine the basis of Darwin's corollary to Haldane's rule, which describes viability and fertility differences between F1 produced from reciprocal crosses. We analyzed asymmetries in hybrid viability from >100 reciprocal crosses involving 36 toad species to test whether relatively high rates of mitochondrial vs. nuclear evolution produce dams with systematically less viable F1 hybrid progeny...
