چکیده

We have found a new clue to the transition mechanism between optical high/X-ray off and optical low/X-ray on states of the LMC supersoft X-ray source RX J0513.9−6951. A sharp ∼ 1 mag drop is common to the CI Aql 2000 outburst. These drops are naturally attributed to cessation of optically thick winds on white dwarfs. A detailed light-curve analysis of CI Aql indicates that the size of a disk drastically shrinks when the wind stops. This causes ∼ 1− 2 mag drop in the optical light curve. In RX J0513.9−6951, the same mechanism reproduces sharp ∼ 1 mag drop from optical high to low states. We predict this mechanism also works on the transition from low to high states. Interaction between the wind and the companion star attenuates the mass transfer and drives full cycles of low and high states. Subject headings: binaries: close — novae, cataclysmic variables — stars: individual (CI Aquilae, RX J0513.9−6951) — stars: winds, outflows — X-rays: stars

XMM Spectroscopy of the Transient Supersoft Source RX J0513.9-6951: probing the dynamic white dwarf photosphere

The highly luminous (> 10 erg s) supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) are believed to be Eddington limited accreting white dwarfs undergoing surface hydrogen burning. The current paradigm for SSS involves thermally unstable mass transfer from a 1− 2M⊙ companion. However this model has never been directly confirmed and yet is crucial for the evolution of cataclysmic variables in general, and for the es...

Prediction of Supersoft X-ray Phase, Helium Enrichment, and Turn-off Time in Recurrent Nova Ci Aquilae 2000 Outburst

Recurrent nova CI Aquilae is still bright 300 days after the optical maximum, showing the slowest evolution among recurrent novae. We predict the turn-off time of CI Aql 2000 outburst coming in August 2001 after a supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase lasts 250 days. We also predict helium enrichment of ejecta, He/H∼ 0.25 by number. Observational confirmations are urgently required. Based on the o...

Revised Analysis of the Supersoft X-ray Phase, Helium Enrichment, and Turn-off Time in the 2000 Outburst of the Recurrent Nova Ci Aquilae

Recurrent nova CI Aquilae has entered the final decline phase a bit before May of 2001, about 300 days after the optical maximum, showing the slowest evolution among recurrent novae. Based on the optically thick wind mass-loss theory of the thermonuclear runaway model, we have estimated the turnoff time of the CI Aql 2000 outburst. It is in late March of 2001 after a luminous supersoft X-ray so...

We have analyzed nearly eight years of MACHO optical photometry of the supersoft X-ray binary RX J0513.9−6951 and derived a revised orbital period and ephemeris. Previously published velocities are reinterpreted using the new ephemeris. We show that the spectroscopic characteristics of the system depend strongly on whether the system is in a high or low optical state. We also discuss the proper...

The nature of the supersoft X - ray source RX J 0513 – 69

We present spectroscopy and photometry of the LMC supersoft binary system RX J0513.9-6951. We derive a refined spectroscopic period of P= 0.761± 0.004 d, which is consistent with the value obtained from long term photometric monitoring (P= 0.76278± 0.00005 d). We see bipolar outflow components of Heii and Hβ, with velocities of ∼ 3800 km s−1, strongly suggesting that the compact object is a whi...
