چکیده

It is energy-consuming and operationally cumbersome for all users to continuously estimate the channel quality before each transmission decision in opportunistic scheduling over wireless fading channels. This observation motivates us to understand whether and how opportunistic gains can still be achieved with significant reductions in channel probing requirements and without centralized coordination amongst the competing users. To that end, we first study a basic scenario with symmetric arrivals to explicitly characterize the maximum achievable throughput as a function of the allowable probing rates in symmetric and independent ON-OFF fading channels. This result indicates that a natural randomized strategy for distributed implementation cannot exploit the full opportunistic gains. This finding inspires us to design an optimal centralized joint probing and transmission algorithm under the probing constraints. Noting the difficulties in the implementation of the centralized solution, we develop a novel Sequential Greedy Probing (SGP) algorithm by using the maximum-minimums identity, which is naturally well-suited for physical implementation and distributed operation. We show that the SGP algorithm is optimal in the important scenario of symmetric and independent ON-OFF fading channels. Then, we study a variant of the SGP algorithm in general fading channels to obtain its efficiency ratio as an explicit function of the channel statistics and rates, and note its tightness in the symmetric and independent ON-OFF fading scenario. We further expand on the distributed implementation of these greedy solutions by using the Fast-CSMA technique.

A Blind Hammerstein Diversity Combining Technique for Flat Fading Channels

Diversity combining techniques play an important role in combating the destructive effects of channel fading in wireless communication systems. In this work we present a blind diversity combining technique for Rayleigh flat fading channels based on Hammerstein type filters. We show that the performance of this technique is very close to ideal MRC system which is accepted as an optimum receiver ...

Distributed Opportunistic Scheduling in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

Opportunistic scheduling monitors the receivers’ channel states and schedules packets to the receivers in relatively good channel conditions. Opportunistic scheduling can be easily implemented in cellular networks such as the 1xEVDO system because the channel state report function is embedded in the system. To apply opportunistic scheduling to WLANs, deficient of channel report functions, we fi...

Multi-user Diversity for IEEE 802.11 Infrastructure Wireless LAN

To realize high data rate wireless communication systems, much attention is being payed to multi-user diversity due to large bandwidth availability. Multi-user diversity based opportunistic scheduling is a modern view communication over fading wireless channels, whereby, unlike rate adaptation based schemes, channel variations are exploited rather than mitigated. This paper proposes a multi-use...

Bursty Traffic Meets Fading: A Cross-Layer Design Perspective∗

We study cross-layer optimization of transmitting bursty traffic over fading channels. A common theme is to exploit (rather than combat) channel variation and traffic burstiness. Specifically, for bursty data transmissions in CDMA networks, we identify the existence of a nontrivial predictive multi-access interference (MAI) temporal structure in such systems. The predictive MAI structure is uti...
