چکیده

We evaluate the impact of tutor voice quality in the context of our intelligent tutoring spoken dialogue system. We first describe two versions of our system which yielded two corpora of human-computer tutoring dialogues: one using a tutor voice pre-recorded by a human, and the other using a lowcost text-to-speech tutor voice. We then discuss the results of two-tailed t-tests comparing student learning gains, system usability, and dialogue efficiency across the two corpora and across corpora subsets. Overall, our results suggest that tutor voice quality may have only a minor impact on these metrics in the context of our tutoring system. We find that tutor voice quality does not impact learning gains, but it may impact usability and efficiency for some corpora subsets.

Spoken Versus Typed Human and Computer Dialogue Tutoring

While human tutors typically interact with students using spoken dialogue, most computer dialogue tutors are text-based. We have conducted two experiments comparing typed and spoken tutoring dialogues, one in a human-human scenario, and another in a human-computer scenario. In both experiments, we compared spoken versus typed tutoring for learning gains and time on task, and also measured the c...

Recognizing student emotions and attitudes on the basis of utterances in spoken tutoring dialogues with both human and computer tutors

While human tutors respond to both what a student says and to how the student says it, most tutorial dialogue systems cannot detect the student emotions and attitudes underlying an utterance. We present an empirical study investigating the feasibility of recognizing student state in two corpora of spoken tutoring dialogues, one with a human tutor, and one with a computer tutor. We first annotat...

Speech recognition performance and learning in spoken dialogue tutoring

Speech recognition errors have been shown to negatively correlate with user satisfaction in evaluations of task-oriented spoken dialogue systems. In the domain of tutorial dialogue systems, however, where the primary evaluation metric is student learning, there has been little investigation of whether speech recognition errors also negatively correlate with learning. In this paper we examine co...

A Comparison Of Tutor And Student Behavior In Speech Versus Text Based Tutoring

This paper describes preliminary work in exploring the relative effectiveness of speech versus text based tutoring. Most current tutorial dialogue systems are text based (Evens et al., 2001; Rose and Aleven, 2002; Zinn et al., 2002; Aleven et al., 2001; VanLehn et al., 2002). However, prior studies have shown considerable benefits of tutoring through spoken interactions (Lemke, 1990; Chi et al....

Advantages of Spoken Language Interaction in Dialogue-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems

The ability to lead collaborative discussions and appropriately scaffold learning has been identified as one of the central advantages of human tutorial interaction [6]. In order to reproduce the effectiveness of human tutors, many developers of tutorial dialogue systems have taken the approach of identifying human tutorial tactics and then incorporating them into their systems. Equally importa...
