Illumination Invariant Face Recognition Using Photometric Stereo

چکیده
In this paper, we propose an elegant approach for illumination invariant face recognition based on the photometric stereo technique. The basic idea is to reconstruct the surface normal and the albedo of a face using photometric stereo images, and then use them as the illumination independent model of the face. And, we have investigated the optimal light source directions for accurate surface shape reconstruction, and the robust estimation technique for the illumination direction of an input face image. We have tested the proposed algorithm with 125 real face images of 25 persons which are taken under 5 quite different illumination conditions, and achieved the success rate of more than 80%. Comparison results of conventional face recognition methods and the proposed method are also evaluated. These results demonstrate that the proposed technique have a great potential for the robust face recognition even when the lighting condition changes severely. key words: face recognition, illumination invariance, photometric stereo, 3D reconstruction

Photometric Stereo for 3D Face Reconstruction Using Non Linear Illumination Models
Face recognition in presence of illumination changes, variant pose and different facial expressions is a challenging problem. In this paper, a method for 3D face reconstruction using photometric stereo and without knowing the illumination directions and facial expression is proposed in order to achieve improvement in face recognition. A dimensionality reduction method was introduced to represen...
متن کاملCharacterization of Human Faces under Illumination Variations Using Rank, Integrability, and Symmetry Constraints
Photometric stereo algorithms use a Lambertian reflectance model with a varying albedo field and involve the appearances of only one object. This paper extends photometric stereo algorithms to handle all the appearances of all the objects in a class, in particular the class of human faces. Similarity among all facial appearances motivates a rank constraint on the albedos and surface normals in ...

متن کاملUsing Photometric Stereo for Face Recognition
This paper aims to review the technique of Photometric Stereo (PS), with specific application to face recognition. PS is a method to rapidly estimate the three-dimensional geometry of a face (or any other Lambertian-like object) using several images with an identical viewpoint but varied illumination directions. The contributions of this paper are to (1) summarise the pros and cons of PS compar...
متن کاملGeneralized photometric stereo and its application to face recognition
Most photometric stereo algorithms employ a Lambertian reflectance model with a varying albedo field and involve the appearances of only one object. The recovered albedos and surface normals are object-specific and appearances not belonging to the object cannot be easily handled. We generalize photometric stereo algorithms to handle all appearances of all objects in a class, in particular the h...
