The Rise of Vertical Specialization Trade

چکیده

Vertical specialization (VS) trade, trade in goods that incorporate imported inputs, has grown rapidly since the 1960s. While the share of trade in inputs has not increased, the types of inputs traded have shifted from raw materials to manufactured parts. I argue that declining trade costs are an important explanation for these facts. I present a three stage vertical specialization trade model, with raw materials, manufactured parts and final goods sectors. In the simulated model, falling trade costs explain much of the observed growth in overall and VS trade. Manufacturing trade grows twice as fast as overall trade. Raw materials trade was more important in the 1960s when trade costs were high, since their production is more strongly linked to endowments than manufacturing. Therefore, materials will be traded even when trade costs are high. Trade costs have fallen more for manufactured goods over the last 40 years, leading to a rapid expansion of manufactured parts trade relative to materials. JEL classification: F1.

A Perfect Specialization Model for Gravity Equation in Bilateral Trade based on Production Structure

Although initially originated as a totally empirical relationship to explain the volume of trade between two partners, gravity equation has been the focus of several theoretic models that try to explain it. Specialization models are of great importance in providing a solid theoretic ground for gravity equation in bilateral trade. Some research papers try to improve specialization models by addi...

Trade Verticality and Structural Change in Industries:TheCasesofTaiwanandSouthKorea

This paper documents that a significant portion of trade for Taiwan and Korea follows the trend of world trade in moving toward a pattern of vertical specialization (VS). Noteworthy is the manufacturing sector, whose VS shares of exports has been steadily increasing and has accounted for more than 90% of the total VS shares of manufactured exports. For Taiwan, nearly 57% of the growth in export...

International Trade Patterns and Labor Markets – An Empirical Analysis for EU Member States

During the last decades, international trade flows especially of the industrialized countries allegedly became more and more intra-industry. At the same time, employment perspectives particularly of the low-skilled by tendency deteriorated in these countries. This phenomenon is often traced back to the fact that intra-industry trade, which should theoretically involve low labor market adjustmen...

Vertical Specialization and Intra-industry Trade: the Role of Factor Endowments

In this paper, we rely on vertical differentiation models (Falvey-Kierzkowski type) to study the effects of differences in factor endowments on vertical intra-industry specialization. These effects can vary depending on the relative position of each country in terms of both its specialization in high or low qualities and its technological (dis)advantage. We focus on the Spanish intra-industry t...
