چکیده

Background and Purpose Transforming growth factor-/31 (TGF-/31) is a multifunctional polypeptide that controls the production of extracellular matrix protein. Platelets store a large quantity of TGF-/31, which is released at hemorrhage. We recently reported that human recombinant TGF-/31 induced communicating hydrocephalus in mice. The aim of this study was to determine whether TGF-01 is related to the development of communicating hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Methods TGF-01 in the cerebrospinal fluid of 24 patients with SAH was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels were compared between hydrocephalic and nonhydrocephalic groups. Western blot analysis was performed to determine active TGF-^1 in the cerebrospinal fluid. Results TGF-/31 rapidly decreased from the onset of SAH. The level of TGF-/31 of 13 patients showing ventricular

Cerebrospinal fluid circulation following subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Accurate definition of these abnormali ties is important because in some instances they result in symptomatic communicating hydrocephalus (1 ,2) . Current methods of assessing the patency of the su...

Thrombin-induced TGF-β1 pathway: a cause of communicating hydrocephalus post subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The mechanism of communicating hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) remains unclear. Revealing a signaling cascade may provide significant insights into the molecular etiology of the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in cerebral compartments during SAH. To investigate the mechanism of the communicating hydrocephalus following ...

Ventriculosternal Shunting for the Management of Hydrocephalus: Case Report of A Novel Technique

BACKGROUND Conventional cerebrospinal fluid diversion such as ventriculoperitoneal or ventriculoatrial shunting for the management of hydrocephalus is one of the commonest neurosurgical procedures. However, in selected patients, surgical options are limited when relative contraindications for these operations exist. A patient who underwent ventriculosternal shunting, a novel procedure, is prese...

Cerebrospinal fluid tenascin-C increases preceding the development of chronic shunt-dependent hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The possible cause of chronic hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has been reported to be meningeal fibrosis. We examined whether the induction of tenascin-C (TN-C), an extracellular matrix glycoprotein known to promote tissue fibrosis, was associated with chronic hydrocephalus after SAH. METHODS We prospectively measured cerebrospinal fluid TN-C levels in...
