Proximal Metatarsal Lameness in Sports Horses: A Clinical Approach to Diagnosis
نویسنده
چکیده
Proximal metatarsal pain is most commonly caused by desmopathy or enthesopathy of the proximal part of the suspensory ligament. Diagnosis of the causes of proximal metatarsal pain has improved markedly with the use of more specific regional analgesic techniques, objective techniques of lameness quantification, and cross-sectional imaging methods. However, even diagnostic anesthesia of the deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve cannot be considered totally specific for the diagnosis of proximal suspensory desmitis. Treatment methods are often unsuccessful, and neurectomy of the deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve may be necessary to regain soundness. Use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Diagnose Injuries in the Proximal Metacarpus and Metatarsus in Horses
The exact cause of lameness in the proximal metacarpal and metatarsal region in horses can be difficult to determine when traditional diagnostics do not yield a diagnosis. High field-strength magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides clear evaluation of the proximal metacarpus/metatarsus in horses with performance-limiting injuries. The ability to accurately diagnose the source of lameness is i...
متن کاملThursday September 12th, 09.20 – 09.45 Clinical aspects of subchondral bone pain in the fetlock in racehorses and sports horses
Subchondral bone pain is often the result of a stress-adaptation mismatch injury involving the condyles of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bones, frequently involving both forelimbs or both hindlimbs, or all four limbs. Therefore the presenting complaint is usually loss of action or decline in performance, rather than overt lameness. The horse may have a short scratchy trot and prefer to canter...
متن کاملShort term analgesic effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in horses with proximal palmar metacarpal/plantar metatarsal pain.
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an accepted form of treatment for chronic cases of proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD). Subjective evaluation of horses shortly after being treated with ESWT has led clinicians to comment on an immediate reduction in lameness. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic effect of ESWT on 16 horses with PSD or PSD-like pain in a fore- or hindlimb. To obj...

Objective- To determine if the pain of the third phalanx due to sidebone fracture in horses can be attenuated by analgesia of the distal interphlangeal joint and palmar digital nerve block. Design- Clinical study. Animals- Seven horses with unilateral forelimb lameness associated with hoof pain due to sidebone fracture. Procedures- Seven mix breed show jumping horses were selected from hor...
متن کاملProximal Suspensory Desmitis in the Sports Horse in Forelimbs
Proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD) results in sudden onset lameness, which can be remarkably transient, resolving within 24 hours unless the horse is worked hard. In horses with more chronic injury lameness may be persistent. PSD in forelimbs occurs in horses of all ages and from all disciplines. Extravagantly moving young dressage horses and older upper level competition horses are particularl...
