چکیده

The issue of the relationship between the central mean sealevel pressure (Pc) and maximum mean near-surface wind* (the wind-pressure relationship, hereafter WPR) in a tropical cyclone (TC) has been the subject of ongoing debate for many decades and a number of relationships have been developed during this period. This is demonstrated by the fact that the three Australian Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs) have each used a different WPR: Perth used the method of Atkinson and Holliday (1977) (hereafter A&H), Darwin used Love and Murphy (1985) (hereafter L&M) and Brisbane used a method based upon an unpublished study Adapting the Knaff and Zehr wind-pressure relationship for operational use in Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres

Reexamination of Tropical Cyclone Wind–Pressure Relationships

Tropical cyclone wind–pressure relationships are reexamined using 15 yr of minimum sea level pressure estimates, numerical analysis fields, and best-track intensities. Minimum sea level pressure is estimated from aircraft reconnaissance or measured from dropwindsondes, and maximum wind speeds are interpolated from best-track maximum 1-min wind speed estimates. The aircraft data were collected p...

Implications of Summertime Sea Level Pressure Anomalies in the Tropical Atlantic Region

This study explores the inverse relationship between sea level pressure and tropical cyclones in the tropical Atlantic (TA). Upper-air observations, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (formerly the National Meteorological Center)/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis, and regional SSTs provide clues as to the physics of this relationship using composite ...

Implications of the Observed Relationship between Tropical Cyclone Size and Intensity over the Western North Pacific

Tropical cyclone (TC) size, usually measured with the radius of gale force wind (34 kt or 17m s), is an important parameter for estimating TC risks such as wind damage, rainfall distribution, and storm surge. Previous studies have reported that there is a very weak relationship between TC size and TC intensity. A close examination presented here using satellite-based wind analyses suggests that...

Assessing Hurricane Intensity Using Satellites

Tropical cyclones spend most of their life cycle over the tropical and subtropical oceans. Because of the lack of in situ data in these regions, satellite observations are fundamental for tracking and estimating the intensity of these storms for real-time forecasting and monitoring climate trends. This chapter reviews methods for estimating tropical cyclone intensity from satellites, including ...

Dynamics and Thermodynamics Analysis of Tropical Cyclone Haiyan

Tropical cyclone Haiyan (TCH) that formed over the West Pacific Ocean during 3-11 November 2013 has been investigated using three datasets produced by Japan Meteorology Agency, ECMWF and NCEP. Strength of TCH has been studied using two synoptic parameters of 10-m wind velocity and mean sea level pressure (MSLP). Following, three dynamic parameters including vertical wind shear (VWSH) vector, he...
