SPCalc: A web-based calculator for sample size and power calculations in micro-array studies
نویسندگان
چکیده
UNLABELLED Calculation of the appropriate sample size in planning microarray studies is important because sample collection can be expensive and time-consuming. Sample-size calculation is also a challenging issue for microarray studies because the number of genes is far larger than the number of samples so that traditional methods of sample-size calculation cannot be directly applied. To help investigators answer the question of how many samples are needed in their microarray studies, we developed a user-friendly web-based calculator, SPCalc, for calculating sample size and power for a variety of commonly used experimental designs, including completely randomized treatmentcontrol design, matched-pairs design, multiple-treatment design having an isolated treatment effect, and randomized block design. AVAILABILITY The web-based calculator SPCalc is publicly available at http://www.biostat.harvard.edu /people/faculty/mltlee/webfront-r.html.

Analytical Study of Optical Bi-Stability of a Single-Bus Resonator Based on InGaAs Micro-Ring Array
In this paper, for the first time to our knowledge, we investigate the optical bi-stability in a compact parallel array of micro- ring resonators with 5μm radius, induced by optical nonlinearity. Due to the nature of perfect light confinement, resonance and accumulation process in a ring resonator, optical nonlinear effects, even at small optical power of a few milliwatts in this structure are ...
متن کاملBayesian Sample size Determination for Longitudinal Studies with Continuous Response using Marginal Models
Introduction Longitudinal study designs are common in a lot of scientific researches, especially in medical, social and economic sciences. The reason is that longitudinal studies allow researchers to measure changes of each individual over time and often have higher statistical power than cross-sectional studies. Choosing an appropriate sample size is a crucial step in a successful study. A st...
متن کاملSample size and power calculations in Mendelian randomization with a single instrumental variable and a binary outcome
BACKGROUND Sample size calculations are an important tool for planning epidemiological studies. Large sample sizes are often required in Mendelian randomization investigations. METHODS AND RESULTS Resources are provided for investigators to perform sample size and power calculations for Mendelian randomization with a binary outcome. We initially provide formulae for the continuous outcome cas...

The use and development of mobile interventions are experiencing rapid growth. In "just-in-time" mobile interventions, treatments are provided via a mobile device, and they are intended to help an individual make healthy decisions 'in the moment,' and thus have a proximal, near future impact. Currently, the development of mobile interventions is proceeding at a much faster pace than that of ass...
متن کاملA mixed Bayesian/Frequentist approach in sample size determination problem for clinical trials
In this paper we introduce a stochastic optimization method based ona mixed Bayesian/frequentist approach to a sample size determinationproblem in a clinical trial. The data are assumed to come from a nor-mal distribution for which both the mean and the variance are unknown. In contrast to the usual Bayesian decision theoretic methodology, whichassumes a single decision maker, our method recogni...
