Evaluation of the response of Clibanarius africanus (Decapoda: Paguridae) to crude oil in static bioassay

چکیده
The acute toxicity of Nigeria Bonny light crude oil against hermit crab, Cliabanarius africanus of a tidal creek, Eastern Obolo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria was investigated in the laboratory under static bioassay. The test crude oil was found to be poorly toxic to the test organism, resulting in delayed mortality and consequent extension of the bioassay to 8 days. Based on the LC50, the toxicity of the test compound was more manifested on the 8 day than at 96 hour, with a toxicity factor showing that the test compound was approximately 12 times, more manifested against C. africanus on the 8 day than at 96 hour. Paired t-test showed that there was no significant difference between 96h LC50 (549.9 ml l ) and 8d LC50 (45.2 ml l ). The results of this study indicated that C. africanus is not a good early warning indicator for oil pollution but its response during spills could serve as a good indicator of adverse impact. © 2012 Sjournals. Application of Imidazolium based ionic liquid Nano-emulsions for the removal of H2S from crude oil
Hydrogen sulfide is one of the most dangerous contaminants in crude oil and natural gas that have to be removed prior to the transfer and refining. In this study, hydrophobic ionic liquid, i.e. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylflour, [EMIM] [NTf2], was used as scavenger for the reduction of the H2S. Due to its ionic nature, [EMIM] [NTf2] forms nanoemulsion in crude oil media and hence can diss...
متن کاملRelative toxicity of spent lubricant oil and detergent against benthic macro-invertebrates of a west African estuarine lagoon.
The relative acute toxicity of spent lubricant oil and detergent was evaluated against hermit crab, Clibanarius africanus (Aurivillus) and periwinkle, Tympanotonus fuscatus (L) from the Lagos lagoon in laboratory bioassays. Based on the derived toxicity indices, the detergent (96 hr LC50 = 5.77ml/l) was found to be 1.73 times more toxic than spent engine oil (96 hr LC50 = 10.01 ml/l) when actin...
متن کاملBioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons from crude oil-contaminated soil with the earthworm: Hyperiodrilus africanus
A study on the bioremediation potentials of the earthworm Hyperiodrilus africanus (Beddard) in soil contaminated with crude oil was investigated. Dried and sieved soils were contaminated with 5 ml each of crude oil with replicates and inoculated with earthworms and monitored daily for 12 weeks. Physicochemical parameters such as pH, total organic carbon, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, sodium, pot...
متن کاملLow richness of hermit crabs community (Crustacea: Decapoda: Paguroidea) and high dominance of Clibanarius signatus in the intertidal zones of Larak Island, Persian Gulf, Iran
Abstract Hermit crabs community in the intertidal zones of Larak Island were investigated through a seasonal sampling at five stations using random quadrate sampling method. Overall, seven species were identified and Clibanarius signatus was the dominant species, which showed high dominance over other species. Using Bray-Curtis cluster analysis for comparing seasonal abundance showed that exce...

Ecotoxicological effect of crude oil was evaluated in larvae zoea I of Emerita analoga. The samples were collected of the Cangrejos beach (05o08'30,02''-5o10'46,21'' SL and 81o10'35,04'81o10'24,0'' WL), Piura, Peru. Environmental parameters such as temperature, oxygen, pH and salinity were recorded in situ. The organisms were exposed at five concentrations of crude oil: -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 0,65 mg·L...
