Very High Energy γ-ray Observations of the Galactic Centre Region

چکیده

Recent progress in pushing the sensitivity of the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique into the 10 mCrab regime has enabled first sensitive observations of the innermost few 100 pc of the Milky Way in Very High Energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) γ-rays. These observations are a valuable tool to understand the acceleration and propagation of energetic particles near the Galactic Centre. Remarkably, besides two compact γ-ray sources, faint diffuse γ-ray emission has been discovered with high significance. The current VHE γ-ray view of the Galactic Centre region is reviewed, and possible counterparts of the γ-ray sources and the origin of the diffuse emission are discussed. The future prospects for VHE Galactic Centre observations are discussed based on order-of-magnitude estimates for a CTA type array of telescopes.

Observation of Galactic Sources of Very High Energy Γ-rays with the Magic Telescope

During its first cycle of observations, the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescope has observed very high energy γ-rays from fife galactic objects: the Crab Nebula, the SNRs HESS J1813-178 and HESS J1834-087, the Galactic Center and the γ-ray binary LS I +61 303. After a short introduction to the MAGIC telescope and the data analysis procedure, the results of these fife...

Fermi-LAT observations of the Sagittarius B complex

Aims. We use 5 years of Fermi-LAT data towards the Galactic-centre giant molecular cloud complex, Sagittarius B, to test questions of how well-mixed the Galactic component of cosmic rays are and what the level of the cosmic-ray sea in different parts of the Galaxy is. Methods. We use dust-opacity maps from the Planck satellite to obtain independent methods for background subtraction and an esti...

AGN Observations in the GeV / TeV Energy Range with the MAGIC

MAGIC currently is the largest imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescope world-wide. Since 2004, γ-ray emission from several active galactic nuclei in the GeV/TeV energy range has been detected, some of which were newly discovered as very-high energy γ-ray sources. The γ-rays are assumed to originate from particle acceleration processes in the AGN jets. We give an overview of the AGN observed and ...

Predictions of Very High Energy Γ-ray Fluxes for Three Active Galactic Nuclei

M87 is the first extragalactic source detected at the TeV that is not a blazar. To account for the recent observations of M87 made by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) telescope array, we developed a new multi-blob synchrotron self-Compton model. In the framework of this model, we present here the predictions for the very high energy emission of three active galactic nuclei with ex...

The inner few hundred parsecs of our galaxy provide a laboratory for the study of the production and propagation of energetic particles. Very-high-energy γ-rays provide an effective probe of these processes and, especially when combined with data from other wave-bands, γ-rays observations are a powerful diagnostic tool. Within this central region, data from the H.E.S.S. instrument have revealed...
