چکیده

DEXMEDETOMIDINE is a highly selective 2 adrenoceptor agonist that has sedative and analgesic properties with associated reduction in opioid and anesthetic requirements. One significant advantage of dexmedetomidine is that in the clinical dose range there is no respiratory depression. The agonistic action on the 2 adrenoceptors in the sympathetic ganglia modulates the release of catecholamines, resulting in a sympatholytic effect and reports of bradycardia and hypotension. As the dose of dexmedetomidine is increased, there is a direct action on the blood vessels causing vasoconstriction and a possible increase in blood pressure. This report describes three patients who presented for surgery with potential airway management challenges. Dexmedetomidine was administered to these patients in increasing doses until general anesthesia was attained. The effects of these high doses of dexmedetomidine on respiratory function and hemodynamics are described. The rate of dexmedetomidine infusion was administered based on actual patient body weights.

Dexmedetomidine as a total intravenous anesthetic in infants.

In this case report, we describe the use of dexmedetomidine as the sole anesthetic for four infants requiring general anesthesia for direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy with spontaneous ventilation. Surgical conditions were adequate and the hemodynamic and respiratory profiles of this technique are described.

Effect of dexmedetomidine on consumption of anesthetic agents, duration of surgery, time to extubation and post-operative emergence during endoscopic nasal surgeries: a pilot study

Our aim was to study the effects of dexmedetomidine on anesthetic consumption, duration of surgery, time to extubation and post-operative emergence when used as an adjunct to general anesthesia in endoscopic nasal surgeries. Fifty two patients scheduled for elective nasal surgery (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Functional Endoscopic Nasal surgery) were randomized into two groups. Dexme...

Successful intraoperative spinal cord monitoring during scoliosis surgery using a total intravenous anesthetic regimen including dexmedetomidine.

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) during corrective spinal surgery is widely used. Because of the possible interference with the recording of evoked potentials by inhalational anesthetics, total intravenous anesthetic (TIVA) regimens have been advocated. TIVA regimens may be difficult to use in pediatric populations due to metabolic factors. We report on the results of multimo...
