چکیده

We study Hamiltonian dynamics of a Fermi–Pasta–Ulam (FPU) chain with bi-stable elements. We show, that a quasi-static driving of a ‘cold’ chain beyond the spinodal threshold leads to complex dynamical behavior involving equipartition which suggests thermalization. The subsequent quasi-static cycling between the two energy wells produces reversible temperature oscillations which we link to the release (or absorbtion) of the latent heat. By adopting canonical distribution we obtain a thermodynamical description of the chain which agreeswell with numerically computed time-averaged behavior of the corresponding dynamical system.

Bismuth under intense laser pulses: a Fano-like interference description.

New time-resolved experiments by Misochko et al published in a recent issue of J. Phys.: Condens. Matter [1] have furthered our understanding of the complex behaviour of Bi far from equilibrium. There has been a long-standing interest in the dynamical path from a coherent to a stochastic state. In 1955, Fermi, Pasta, and Ulam (FPU) [2] numerically tested the ergodicity hypothesis of statistical...

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam paradox, Anderson Localization problem and the the generalized diffusion approach

The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, based on the interpretation of a quantum tight-binding model in terms of a classical Hamiltonian map, we consider the Anderson localization (AL) problem as the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) effect in a modified dynamical system containing both stable and unstable (inverted) modes. Delocalized states in the AL are analogous to the stable quasi-periodic motion ...

CONTROL OF CHAOS IN A DRIVEN NON LINEAR DYNAMICAL SYSTEM

We present a numerical study of a one-dimensional version of the Burridge-Knopoff model [16] of N-site chain of spring-blocks with stick-slip dynamics. Our numerical analysis and computer simulations lead to a set of different results corresponding to different boundary conditions. It is shown that we can convert a chaotic behaviour system to a highly ordered and periodic behaviour by making on...

Route to thermalization in the α-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam system.

We study the original α-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system with N = 16, 32, and 64 masses connected by a nonlinear quadratic spring. Our approach is based on resonant wave-wave interaction theory; i.e., we assume that, in the weakly nonlinear regime (the one in which Fermi was originally interested), the large time dynamics is ruled by exact resonances. After a detailed analysis of the α-FPU equatio...

Some analytic results on the FPU paradox

We present some analytic results aiming at explaining the lack of thermalization observed by Fermi Pasta and Ulam in their celebrated numerical experiment. In particular we focus on results which persist as the number N of particles tends to infinity. After recalling the FPU experiment and some classical heuristic ideas that have been used for its explanation, we concentrate on more recent rigo...
