Mergers and Government Policy *
نویسنده
چکیده
It has long been thought that government antitrust policy has an effect on aggregate merger and acquisition activity, but the empirical support for this hypothesis has been weak and inconsistent. This paper uses a new empirical specification and a new dataset on mergers and acquisitions to provide support for this conjecture. Regression analysis shows that government policy has a significant influence on mergers and that the nature of the effects depends on the type of merger. Fitting the time series into a two-state Markov switching model shows that conglomerate and horizontal time series follow different dynamics for the last half century, which is most likely caused by the dissimilar treatment of the two types of merger by the government. Only the conglomerate merger and acquisition time series is well described by a two-state Markov switching model. In contrast, the horizontal time series has a break in the early 1980s that may be attributed to the dramatic change in government policy. ∗I am indebted to Professor Frank Gollop, Professor Christopher Baum, and Dr. Robert Triest for their guidance and support. I thank Dr. Russell Pittman and Dr. Gregory Werden for their helpful comments. Any errors are, of course, my own.

What drives mergers and acquisitions waves in developing countries? Evidences from Iranian banking industry
M any Middle-East countries, like Iran, have dynamic banking industries and have observed merger and acquisitions (M&A) waves. M&A waves are usually defined in the developed world context and some of their main drivers were identified as: market timing, environment's shocks, merger manias, government regulation and regulatory, and technological changes. It has been discussed that merger waves ...
متن کاملEnvironmental Policies and Mergers of Local Firms By Rafael
We develop a model to analyze environmental policies in the presence of mergers and foreign direct investment. There are two countries and two type of firms (one type in each country). Firms in each country produce a homogeneous good to be consumed in both markets. Each firm creates pollution as a by product of output. Using the above specification, we examine the consequences of two alternativ...
متن کاملPolitical Contributions , Foreign Direct Investment and Mergers
We examine the effects of mergers and internal groups (lobbies) in shaping national policies towards foreign direct investment. Lobbying is modeled following the political contributions approach. In this work we develop a partial equilibrium model of an oligopolistic industry in which a number of domestic and foreign firms compete in the market for a homogeneous good in a host country. It is as...

In the second half of the last century the attitude with respect to foreign investment has changed, and the role of this investment on development of Latin-American economies has become crucial. A fierce competition is taking place among these countries in a even more integrated region where environmental policies have become one of the suitable instruments to manage the perturbations on welfar...
