The Stellar Populations of Spiral Disks.ii. Measuring and Modeling the Radial Distribution of Absorption Spectral Indices

چکیده

The radial distributions of the Mg2 and Fe5270 Lick spectral indices have been measured to large radial distances on the disks of NGC 4303 and NGC 4535 using an imaging technique based on interference filters. These data, added to those of NGC 4321 previously published in Paper I of this series are used to constraint chemical (multiphase) evolutionary models for these galaxies. Because the integrated light of a stellar disk is a time average over the history of the galaxy weighted by the star formation rate, these constraints complement the information on chemical gradients provided by the study of H ii regions which, by themselves, can only provide the α–elements abundance acummulated over the life of the galaxy. The agreement between the observations and the model predictions shown here lends confidence to the models which are then used to describe the time evolution of galaxy parameters such as star formation rates, chemical gradients, and gradients in the mean age of the stellar population.

Radial distributions of spectral absorption indices in spiral disks

We present a grid of 440 spectro-photometric models for simulating spiral and irregular galaxies. They have been consistently calculated with evolutionary synthesis models which use as input the information proceeding from chemical evolution models. The model predictions are spectral energy distributions, brightness and color profiles and radial distributions of spectral absorption stellar indi...

The Stellar Populations of Spiral Disks. Iii. Constraining Their Evolutionary Histories

We study the old problem of the uniqueness of chemical evolution models by analyzing a set of multiphase models for the galaxy NGC 4303 computed for a variety of plausible physical input parameters. We showed in Mollá et al. (1999) that multiphase chemical evolution models for the three Virgo cluster galaxies NGC 4303, NGC 4321 and NGC 4535, were able to reproduce the observed radial distributi...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Relativistic Stellar Models with Quadratic Equation of State

In this paper, we have obtained and presented new relativistic stellar configurations considering an anisotropic fluid distribution with a charge distribution and a gravitational potential Z(x) that depends on an adjustable parameter. The quadratic equation of state based on Feroze and Siddiqui viewpoint is used for the matter distribution. The new solutions can be written in terms of elementar...

Near-infrared spectroscopy of stellar populations in nearby spiral galaxies

We present high spatial resolution, medium spectral resolution near-infrared (NIR) Hand K-band long-slit spectroscopy for a sample of 29 nearby (z < 0.01) inactive spiral galaxies, to study the composition of their NIR stellar populations. These spectra contain a wealth of diagnostic stellar absorption lines, e.g., Mg I 1.575 μm, Si I 1.588 μm, CO (6–3) 1.619 μm, Mg I 1.711 μm, Na I 2.207 μm, C...
