چکیده

Segregation is a complex and poorly understood phenomenon that is prevalent in many industrial and natural granular flows. When grains flow down a slope [1–5], are spun in a rotating drum [6–8] or shaken in a box [9], we observe those grains organising into intriguing patterns. Kinetic sieving is the dominant mode of segregation in granular avalanches, where separation of particles occurs according to size. Using a cellular automaton we have modelled kinetic sieving as the swapping of particles in a one-dimensional system. From the cellular automaton we have deduced a continuum model to describe the segregation.

Mixing and Segregation of Granular Materials

Granular materials segregate. Small differences in either size or density lead to flow-induced segregation, a complex phenomenon without parallel in fluids. Modeling of mixing and segregation processes requires the confluence of several tools, including continuum and discrete descriptions (particle dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, cellular automata computations) and, often, considerable geome...

Particle-size segregation and diffusive remixing in shallow granular avalanches

Segregation and mixing of dissimilar grains is a problem in many industrial and pharmaceutical processes, as well as in hazardous geophysical flows, where the sizedistribution can have a major impact on the local rheology and the overall run-out. In this paper, a simple binary mixture theory is used to formulate a model for particlesize segregation and diffusive remixing of large and small part...

Kink-induced transport and segregation in oscillated granular layers.

We use experiments and molecular dynamics simulations of vertically oscillated granular layers to study horizontal particle segregation induced by a kink (a boundary between domains oscillating out of phase). Counterrotating convection rolls carry the larger particles in a bidisperse layer along the granular surface to a kink, where they become trapped. The convection originates from avalanches...

Particle Size Segregation in Granular Avalanches

When particles with different material properties are segregated by size or density they often have a subtle feedback on the local mobility of the granular material, which can significantly modify the bulk flow. Perhaps the most striking example of this segregation-mobility feedback occurs in geophysical mass flows, such as debris-flows, dense pyroclastic avalanches and snow avalanches. Larger ...

A theory for particle size segregation in shallow granular free-surface flows

Granular materials composed of a mixture of grain sizes are notoriously prone to segregation during shaking or transport. In this paper, a binary mixture theory is used to formulate a model for kinetic sieving of large and small particles in thin, rapidly flowing avalanches, which occur in many industrial and geophysical free-surface flows. The model is based on a simple percolation idea, in wh...
