The Behavioural Neurology of Basal Ganglia Disorders
نویسنده
چکیده
Basal ganglia disorders are common clinical conditions characterised by specific motor dysfunction and associated behavioral problems. The underlying pathophysiology primarily consists in alterations of the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical pathways, which can be related to both neurodegenerative pathology (e.g. Parkinson disease, Huntington disease) and neurodevelopmental processes (e.g. Tourette syndrome, dystonia). Modulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission within the basal ganglia circuitries represents the mainstay of pharmacological treatment for these conditions. This thematic issue on “The behavioural neurology of basal ganglia disorders” explores the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the most common basal ganglia disorders, with special focus on the neurochemical targets for pharmacotherapy. The introductory article (Ward et al.) presents the functional neuroanatomy and behavioral correlates of basal ganglia as demonstrated by case studies of patients with selective lesions affecting the cortico-basal pathways. Lesions involving the caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus have been found to be associated with a spectrum of behavioral and cognitive symptoms, including abulia, poor working memory and

Book reviews ADVANCES IN NEUROLOGY. VOLUME 65. BEHAVIOURAL NEUROLOGY OF MOVEMENT
Although the fact that there is an underlying organic basis for mental dysfunctions in extrapyramidal diseases may, in itself, not be an entirely new concept (see also Hassler and Christ, 1984; Wolters and Scheltens, 1994), it does merit more attention and every 'extrapyramidal-minded' neurologist, neuropsychologist and psychiatrist will, no doubt, welcome the publication of the book Behavioura...
متن کاملSubacute dementia and imaging correlates in a case of Fahr's disease.
We report a case of idiopathic bilateral basal ganglia calcinosis, or Fahr's disease (FD) in a 50 year old patient who developed rapidly progressive behavioural abnormalities and severe neuropsychological impairments, but no movement disorder. Neuropsychological deficits included a severe dysexecutive syndrome, anterograde amnesia, and attentional impairment. Neuropsychiatric features comprised...
متن کاملFunctional Neuroanatomy and Behavioural Correlates of the Basal Ganglia: Evidence from Lesion Studies
INTRODUCTION The basal ganglia are interconnected with cortical areas involved in behavioural, cognitive and emotional processes, in addition to movement regulation. Little is known about which of these functions are associated with individual basal ganglia substructures. METHODS Pubmed was searched for literature related to behavioural, cognitive and emotional symptoms associated with focal ...
متن کاملP103: The Association between Antibasal Ganglia Antibodies of Streptococcal Infection and Neurological Conditions
The outbreak of the post-streptococcal neurological disorders related to the antibasal ganglia antibodies is broadening. In addition to the disorders such as chorea and obsessive-compulsive disorder which have been recognized previously, the movement and behavioral abnormalities are the other aspects of post-streptococcal neurological disorders. Streptococcus is a positive-gram and coccus...
متن کاملFahr's Disease Presenting with Dementia at Onset: A Case Report and Literature Review
Fahr's disease (FD) is characterized by sporadic or familiar idiopathic calcification of the basal ganglia, dentate nuclei of the cerebellum, and centrum semiovale, mainly presenting with movement disorder, dementia, and behavioral abnormalities. We described a rare case of Fahr's disease presenting at onset only with behavioral and neuropsychological alterations, whose diagnosis was supposed o...
