Remarks on Research Issues in Electronic Commerce: Krugman's Challenge and the Pooh-pooh Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
We may think of electronic commerce as supported by|or better, simply as|a collection of new technologies. Together, these technologies facilitate the conduct of business through computation and computerized communication. The collection of relevant technologies is a loose one, for it is far from nally determined what the technological constituents of electronic commerce will be. Moreover, it would perhaps be more accurate to say \newly emerging technologies" or \newly applicable technologies," since many of the basic elements of electronic commerce have been in place for some time. Terminological ne points aside, the fact is that the prospects for these technologies have been much remarked upon and, at least to many, seem especially bright. Against such appearances, it may be noted that although the Internet is growing rapidly and gaining widespread acceptance, the volume of actual business transactions under regimes of electronic commerce is not threatening to overwhelm other, previously developed, forms of conducting business. EDI is growing, but rather slowly. Consumers continue predominately to shop at malls and via toll-free telephone numbers. Even a basic solution to the \last mile" connectivity problem is not likely to become available in the next ve years. But things may change and prospects be realized. A more fundamental challenge to the visions of electronic commerce has come from a number of economists, most publicly among them Paul Krugman. Krugman's challenge File: electrocom960429.latex.

Preparing a paper of this breadth was quite intimidating. First, I don't consider myself a philosopher of science, rather a scientist who is a student of philosophy. So, in preparation of this paper, I decided to seek the highest and purest of philosophical thinking. With this in mind, I consulted one of the most profound sages of our time . . . Winnie-the-Pooh. For those of you who are a littl...
