Logicality and Invariance

چکیده
This paper deals with the problem of giving a principled characterization of the class of logical constants. According to the so-called Tarski-Sher thesis, an operation is logical iff it is invariant under permutation. In the model-theoretic tradition, this criterion has been widely accepted as giving a necessary condition for an operation to be logical. But it has been also widely criticized on the account that it counts too many operations as logical, failing thus to provide a sufficient condition. Our aim is to solve this problem of overgeneration by modifying the invariance criterion. We introduce a general notion of invariance under a similarity relation and present the connection between similarity relations and classes of invariant operations. The next task is to isolate a similarity relation well-suited for a definition of logicality. We argue that the standard arguments in favor of invariance under permutation, which rely on the generality and the formality of logic, should be modified. The revised arguments are shown to support an alternative to Tarski’s criterion, according to which an operation is logical iff it is invariant under potential isomorphism. ∗I wish to thank the following for helpful discussions: Johan van Benthem, Serge Bozon, Mikaël Cozic, Jacques Dubucs, Paul Égré, Solomon Feferman, Henri Galinon, John MacFarlane, Gabriel Sandu, Philippe Schlenker, Gila Sher, Jouko Väänänen and Dag Westerståhl. Logical Operations and Invariance
I present a notion of invariance under arbitrary surjective mappings for operators on a relational finite type hierarchy generalizing the so called Tarski-Sher criterion for logicality and I characterize the invariant operators as definable in a fragment of the first-order language. These results are compared with those obtained by Feferman and it is argued that further clarification of the not...
متن کاملSet-theoretical Invariance Criteria for Logicality
This is a survey of work on set-theoretical invariance criteria for logicality. It begins with a review of the Tarski-Sher thesis in terms, first, of permutation invariance over a given domain and then of isomorphism invariance across domains, both characterized by McGee in terms of definability in the language L ∞,∞. It continues with a review of critiques of the Tarski-Sher thesis, and a prop...
متن کاملLogicality of Conditional Rewrite Systems
A conditional term rewriting system is called logical if it has the same logical strength as the underlying conditional equational system. In this paper we summarize known logicality results and we present new sufficient conditions for logicality of the important class of oriented conditional term rewriting systems.
متن کاملLogical Constants Across Varying Types
We investigate the notion of "logicality" for arbitrary categories of linguistic expression, viewed as a phenomenon which they can all possess to a greater or lesser degree. Various semantic aspects of logicality are analyzed in technical detail: in particular, invariance for permutations of individual objects, and respect for Boolean structure. Moreover, we show how such properties are systema...
