چکیده

A Boolean k-monotone function defined over a finite poset domain D alternates between the values 0 and 1 at most k times on any ascending chain in D. Therefore, k-monotone functions are natural generalizations of the classical monotone functions, which are the 1-monotone functions. Motivated by the recent interest in k-monotone functions in the context of circuit complexity and learning theory, and by the central role that monotonicity testing plays in the context of property testing, we initiate a systematic study of k-monotone functions, in the property testing model. In this model, the goal is to distinguish functions that are k-monotone (or are close to being k-monotone) from functions that are far from being k-monotone. Our results include the following: 1. We demonstrate a separation between testing k-monotonicity and testing monotonicity, on the hypercube domain {0, 1}d, for k ≥ 3; 2. We demonstrate a separation between testing and learning on {0, 1}d, for k = ω(log d): testing k-monotonicity can be performed with 2 √ d·log d·log 1/ε) queries, while learning k-monotone functions requires 2 √ d·1/ε) queries (Blais et al. (RANDOM 2015)). 3. We present a tolerant test for functions f : [n] → {0, 1} with complexity independent of n, which makes progress on a problem left open by Berman et al. (STOC 2014). Our techniques exploit the testing-by-learning paradigm, use novel applications of Fourier analysis on the grid [n], and draw connections to distribution testing techniques. ∗Columbia University. Lower Bounds for Local Monotonicity Reconstruction from Transitive-Closure Spanners

Given a directed graph G = (V,E) and an integer k ≥ 1, a ktransitive-closure-spanner (k-TC-spanner) of G is a directed graph H = (V,EH) that has (1) the same transitive-closure as G and (2) diameter at most k. Transitive-closure spanners are a common abstraction for applications in access control, property testing and data structures. We show a connection between 2-TC-spanners and local monoton...

Flipping out with many flips: hardness of testing k-monotonicity

A function f : {0, 1} → {0, 1} is said to be k-monotone if it flips between 0 and 1 at most k times on every ascending chain. Such functions represent a natural generalization of (1-)monotone functions, and have been recently studied in circuit complexity, PAC learning, and cryptography. Our work is part of a renewed focus in understanding testability of properties characterized by freeness of ...

On Optimality of Stepdown and Stepup Multiple Test Procedures

Consider the multiple testing problem of testing k null hypotheses , where the unknown family of distributions is assumed to satisfy a certain monotonicity assumption. Attention is restricted to procedures that control the familywise error rate in the strong sense and which satisfy a monotonicity condition. Under these assumptions, we prove certain maximin optimality results for some well-known...

K-Monotonicity is Not Testable on the Hypercube

We continue the study of k-monotone Boolean functions in the property testing model, initiated by Canonne et al. (ITCS 2017). Such functions represent a natural generalization of (1-)monotone functions, and have been recently studied in circuit complexity, PAC learni...
