Discrete and well-defined hydrophobic phases confined in self-assembled spherical complexes.

چکیده
Introduction Long alkyl chains have a tendency to aggregate and form localized hydrophobic environments in polar solvent. This tendency has been exploited to prepare a variety of artificial structures, such as micelles, vesicles, core-shell structured polymers, and dendrimers, where the localized hydrophobic environments show interesting properties. These artificial long alkyl chain assemblies, as well as biomembranes, are typically structurally dispersed. The structural disparities result in a distribution of properties. Here we report discrete and well-defined assemblies of alkyl chains confined in a 5 nm spherical coordination shell (Fig. 1). The shell framework quantitatively assembles from 12 Pd ions and 24 bent ligands and sharply defines the boundary of the interior hydrophobic phase of long alkyl chains. Furthermore, the nature of hydrophobic interior can be easily tuned by varying length of the alkyl chains.

The multiple faces of self-assembled lipidic systems
Lipids, the building blocks of cells, common to every living organisms, have the propensity to self-assemble into well-defined structures over short and long-range spatial scales. The driving forces have their roots mainly in the hydrophobic effect and electrostatic interactions. Membranes in lamellar phase are ubiquitous in cellular compartments and can phase-separate upon mixing lipids in dif...
متن کاملPurification, biochemical characterization and self-assembled structure of a fengycin-like antifungal peptide from Bacillus thuringiensis strain SM1
An antifungal lipopeptide fengycin, producing strain SM1 was isolated from farm land soil sample and identified as Bacillus thuringiensis strain SM1 by using 16S rDNA analysis. Fengycin detected in the culture extract was further purified using HPLC and showed a molecular mass of 1492.8 Da by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. Purified fengycin was allowed to construct their self-assembled structure onto a...
متن کاملBuilding Blocks Precisely from Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Nanoparticles
Hierarchical self-assembled structures provide a “bottom-up” method to utilize relatively simple and low cost processes to generate nanoscale patterns (usually through amphiphilic low molecular weight surfactants or block copolymers). These self-assembled structures from block copolymers are generally driven by a combination of repulsive and attractive interactions between the block segments an...
متن کاملMolecular containers assembled through the hydrophobic effect.
This review focuses on molecular containers formed by assembly processes driven by the hydrophobic effect, and summarizes the progress made in the field over the last ten years. This small but growing facet of supramolecular chemistry discusses three classes of molecules used by researchers to investigate how self-assembly can be applied to form discrete, mono-dispersed, and structurally well-d...
متن کاملGiant tubular and toroidal vesicles from self-assembled triblock copolymer-polyaniline complexes in water.
An ABA type amphiphilic triblock copolymer was synthesized via ATRP and sulfonation. New self-assembled morphologies such as toroidal vesicles, giant tubular vesicles, and perforated spherical vesicles were observed from triblock copolymer-polyaniline complexes in water. The mechanism of morphology transformation at different compositions was discussed.
