چکیده

5 The utility of static and adaptive mesh refinement (SMR and AMR, respectively) are ex6 amined for idealized tropical cyclone (TC) simulations in a spectral element f -plane shallow 7 water model. The SMR simulations have varying sizes of the statically refined meshes 8 (geometry-based) while the AMR simulations use a potential vorticity (PV) threshold to 9 adaptively refine the mesh to the evolving TC. Numerical simulations are conducted for four 10 cases: (i) TC-like vortex advecting in a uniform flow, (ii) binary vortex interaction, (iii) 11 barotropic instability of a PV ring, and (iv) barotropic instability of a thin strip of PV. For 12 each case, a high resolution “truth” simulation is compared to two different SMR simula13 tions and three different AMR simulations for accuracy and efficiency. The multiple SMR 14 and AMR simulations have variations in the number of fully-refined elements in the vicinity 15 of the TC. For these idealized cases, it is found that the SMR and AMR simulations are 16 able to resolve the vortex dynamics as well as the “truth” runs, with no significant loss in 17 accuracy in the refined region in the vortex vicinity and with significant speed-ups (factor 18 of 2-5). The overall accuracy is enhanced by a greater area of fully refined mesh in both the 19 SMR and AMR simulations. While these results are highly idealized, they demonstrate the 20 potential for SMR and AMR for the numerical simulation of TCs in three dimensions and 21 more complex models. 22

A BOUNDARY-FITTED SHALLOW WATER MODEL OF SIMULATE TIDE AND SURGE FOR THE HEAD BAY OF BENGAL – APPLICATION TO CYCLONE SIDR (2007) AND AILA (2009)

Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...

A CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'

The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In...

Fast Finite Element Method Using Multi-Step Mesh Process

This paper introduces a new method for accelerating current sluggish FEM and improving memory demand in FEM problems with high node resolution or bulky structures. Like most of the numerical methods, FEM results to a matrix equation which normally has huge dimension. Breaking the main matrix equation into several smaller size matrices, the solving procedure can be accelerated. For implementing ...

Adaptive Grids for Weather and Climate Models

An adaptive grid technique has been applied to a revised version of NCAR/NASA’s next generation dynamical core for climate and weather research. This hydrostatic so-called Lin-Rood dynamics package is based on a conservative and monotonic finite volume discretization in flux form. The adaptive model design utilizes a spherical adaptive-grid library which is based on a cache-efficient block-stru...

Cover interpolation functions and h-enrichment in finite element method

This paper presents a method to improve the generation of meshes and the accuracy of numerical solutions of elasticity problems, in which two techniques of h-refinement and enrichment are used by interpolation cover functions. Initially, regions which possess desired accuracy are detected. Mesh improvment is done through h-refinement for the elements existing in those regions. Total error of th...
