Catalyst rotation, twisting, and bending during multiwall carbon nanotube growth

چکیده
Internal crystalline structure of cementite catalyst particles located inside the base of multiwall carbon nanotubes was studied using nanoprobe convergent-beam electron diffraction. The catalyst particles are single crystalline but exhibit combinations of small-angle ( 1 –3 ) rotations, twists, and bends along their axial length between adjacent locations. Distortions are most severe away from the base up into the nanotube where the number of walls is large. Near the attachment point to the substrate, however, where few, if any graphene walls exist, particles remain undistorted. This suggests that the stresses generated by the surrounding nanotube distort the catalyst particle during growth. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanoscale zirconia as a nonmetallic catalyst for graphitization of carbon and growth of single- and multiwall carbon nanotubes.
We report that nanoparticulate zirconia (ZrO(2)) catalyzes both growth of single-wall and multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and graphitization of solid amorphous carbon. We observe that silica-, silicon nitride-, and alumina-supported zirconia on silicon nucleates single- and multiwall carbon nanotubes upon exposure to hydrocarbons at moderate temperat...

A bstract. Detailed growth mechanism of single-wall nanotube bundles and of multiwall nanotubes of carbon is investigated using ab initio and parametrized calculations. Our results show that single-wall tubes grow only in presence of a catalyst, whereas multi-wall tubes, stabilized at the growing edge by a covalent "lip-lip" interaction, may form in a pure carbon atmosphere. The individual tube...
متن کاملCarbon diffusion from methane into walls of carbon nanotube through structurally and compositionally modified iron catalyst.
To understand diffusion processes occurring inside Fe catalysts during multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) growth, catalysts were studied using atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Nanotube walls emanate from structurally modified and chemically complex catalysts that consist of cementite and a 5 nm amorphous FeOx cap separat...
متن کاملLoad Transfer Issues in the Tensile and Compressive Behavior of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes
Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are considered to be ultra strong and stiff reinforcements for structural composite applications. The load transfer between the inner and outer nanotubes in multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) has to be clearly understood to realize their potential in not only composites, but also other applications such as nano-springs and nano-bearings. In this paper, we study the load t...

We examined the structure, morphology, and orientation of catalyst nanoparticles used for seeding and growing multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition in CH4/H2 gas mixtures. Iron catalyst nanocrystals are converted to Fe3C in CH4/H2 plasmas and the MWCNTs grow from Fe3C nanocrystals. Initially faceted and equiaxed catalyst nanocrystals are distorted and ...
