Direct Observation of Molecular Alignment in Intense Laser Fields by Pulsed Gas Electron Diffraction

چکیده
The anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) electron diffraction pattern of jet-cooled CS2 in an intense nanosecond Nd:YAG laser field (1064 nm, -0.64 TW/cm, 10 ns) was measured by a short-pulsed 25 keV electron beam packet (~7 ns) generated by irradiating a tantalum photocathode with the 4th harmonics of another nanosecond pulsed YAG laser light. It was confirmed from the numerical simulation of the observed anisotropic diffraction image that the alignment of the S-C-S molecular axis proceeds in the intense laser field along the laser polarization direction.

Gas-phase electron diffraction from laser-aligned molecules
Electron diffraction is a valuable tool to capture structural information from molecules in the gas phase. However, the information contained in the diffraction patterns is limited due to the random orientation of the molecules. Additional structural information can be retrieved if the molecules are aligned. Molecules can be impulsively aligned with femtosecond laser pulses, producing a transie...
متن کاملTheory of Gas Ionization by Intense Electromagnetic Fields
The distribution function of the electrons produced in the interaction between an intense electromagnetic wave and a neutral gas is derived and is shown to be nonequilibrium and anisotropic. By assuming that the time scale of gas ionization is much greater than the field period, it is shown that the electron distribution function formed in microwave and optical discharges has sharp anisotropy a...

متن کاملReflection High - Energy Electron Diffraction oscillations during epitaxial growth of artificially layered films of ( BaCuO x ) m / ( CaCuO
Pulsed Laser Deposition in molecular-beam epitaxy environment (Laser-MBE) has been used to grow high quality BaCuO x /CaCuO 2 superlattices. In situ Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) shows that the growth mechanism is 2-dimensional. Furthermore, weak but reproducible RHEED intensity oscillations have been monitored during the growth. Ex-situ x-ray diffraction spectra confirmed...
متن کاملTime-resolved electron diffraction from selectively aligned molecules.
We experimentally demonstrate ultrafast electron diffraction from transiently aligned molecules in the absence of external (aligning) fields. A sample of aligned molecules is generated through photodissociation with femtosecond laser pulses, and the diffraction pattern is captured by probing the sample with picosecond electron pulses shortly after dissociation-before molecular rotation causes t...
