Collision-Free Pattern Formation

چکیده
Shoals of small fishes can change their collective shape and form a specific pattern. They do so efficiently (in parallel) and without collision. In this paper, we study the analog problem of distributed pattern formation. A set of processes needs to move from a set of initial positions to a set of final positions. The processes are oblivious (no internal memory) and must preserve, at any time, a minimal distance between them. A naive solution would be to move the processes one by one, but this would take too long. The difficulty here is to move the processes simultaneously in clearly delimited phases, no matter how unfavorable the initial configuration may be. We solve this by treating the problem “dimension by dimension”: the processes first form 1D trails, then gather into a 2D shape (this technique can be generalized to higher dimensions). We present an optimal algorithm which time complexity depends linearly on the radius of the smallest circle containing both initial and final positions. The algorithm is self-stabilizing, as the processes are oblivious and the initial positions are arbitrary. 1998 ACM Subject Classification C.2.4 Distributed Systems

An Ant-Colony Optimization Clustering Model for Cellular Automata Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks
High efficient routing is an important issue for the design of wireless sensor network (WSN) protocols to meet the severe hardware and resource constraints. This paper presents an inclusive evolutionary reinforcement method. The proposed approach is a combination of Cellular Automata (CA) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) techniques in order to create collision-free trajectories for every agent...

In order to understand the splat formation process of individual splat deposited by thermal spraying, commercially available Nickel powders with diameter of several tens micrometers were thermally sprayed onto mirror polished AISI304 substrate surface. The deposited splat shows transition phenomenon from splash type to disk one in flattening on collision onto substrate surface according to both...

The widespread use of squirrel cage fans, especially in ventilation and home and industrial environments, has led to the formation of many research efforts to improve performance and reduce the sound produced by this type of fan. In the literature, the most important factor in generating sound in this category of fans is the confrontation between the rotor exit flow and the volute of the fan. I...
متن کاملSimulation of collisions in planetary rings
We investigate the evolution of structures in planetary rings in the neighbourhood of the orbit of an embedded moonlet (small satellite). The effects of collisions have been taken into account by introducing the velocity dependent restitution coefficient according to experimental and theoretical results. Here we present results of recent many-particle simulations which show a significant influe...
