Femtosecond ionization of magnesium clusters grown in ultracold helium droplets

چکیده

Magnesium clusters grown in helium droplets and ionized with femtosecond laser pulses have been studied by high resolution mass spectrometry. For moderate laser intensities the abundance spectra show characteristic features indicating electronic shell effects. Compared to clusters of s–electron metals additional shell closures appear resulting from an electron rearrangement. Irradiation with higher laser intensities leads to a decomposition of the magnesium clusters into atomic ions. Due to charge exchange with the surrounding helium matrix mainly singly and doubly charged magnesium ions remain. In addition, the occurrence of MgHe+N–complexes is observed. Their abundance depends on the shape of the laser field, i.e. the laser width and the optical delay when applying the pump–probe technique. Formation of even-numbered hydrogen cluster cations in ultracold helium droplets.

Neutral hydrogen clusters are grown in ultracold helium nanodroplets by successive pickup of hydrogen molecules. Even-numbered hydrogen cluster cations are observed upon electron-impact ionization with and without attached helium atoms and in addition to the familiar odd-numbered H(n)(+). The helium matrix affects the fragmentation dynamics that usually lead to the formation of overwhelmingly o...

Alkali-helium snowball complexes formed on helium nanodroplets.

We systematically investigate the formation and stability of snowballs formed by femtosecond photoionization of small alkali clusters bound to helium nanodroplets. For all studied alkali species Ak = (Na,K,Rb,Cs) we observe the formation of snowballs Ak(+)He(N) when multiply doping the droplets. Fragmentation of clusters Ak(N) upon ionization appears to enhance snowball formation. In the case o...

Time-resolved studies on the collapse of magnesium atom foam in helium nanodroplets

Magnesium atoms embedded in superfluid helium nanodroplets have been identified to arrange themselves in a metastable network, referred to as foam. In order to investigate the ionization dynamics of this unique structure with respect to a possible light-induced collapse, the femtosecond dual-pulse spectroscopy technique is applied. Around zero optical delay a strong feature is obtained which re...

Electron impact ionization and multiphoton ionization of doped superfluid helium droplets: A comparison.

We compare characteristics of electron impact ionization (EI) and multiphoton ionization (MPI) of doped superfluid helium droplets using the same droplet source. Selected dopant ion fragments from the two ionization schemes demonstrate different dependence on the doping pressure, which could be attributed to the different ionization mechanisms. While EI directly ionizes helium atoms in a drople...
