Where Does the Disk Turn into the Halo? Cool Hi in the Outer Milky Way Disk

چکیده

Using HI absorption spectra taken from the recent surveys of λ21-cm line and continuum emission in the Galactic plane, the distribution of cool atomic clouds in the outer disk of the Milky Way is revealed. The warp of the midplane is clearly seen in absorption, as it is in emission, and the cool, neutral medium also shows flaring or increase in scale height with radius similar to that of the warm atomic hydrogen. The mixture of phases, as measured by the fraction of HI in the cool clouds relative to the total atomic hydrogen, stays nearly constant from the solar circle out to about 25 kpc radius. Assuming cool phase temperature ∼ 50 K this indicates a mixing ratio of 15% to 20% cool HI, with the rest warm.

Tidal Imprints Of A Dark Sub-Halo On The Outskirts Of The Milky Way

We present a new analysis of the observed perturbations of the HI disk of the Milky Way to infer the existence of a dark sub-halo that tidally interacted with the Milky Way disk. We examine tidal interactions between perturbing dark sub-halos and the gas disk of the Milky Way using high resolution Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. We compare our results to the observed HI map o...

The Outer Disk of the Milky Way Seen in λ21-cm Absorption

Three recent surveys of 21-cm line emission in the Galactic plane, combining single dish and interferometer observations to achieve resolution of 1 to 2, ∼ 1 km s, and good brightness sensitivity, have provided some 650 absorption spectra with corresponding emission spectra for study of the distribution of warm and cool phase HI in the interstellar medium. These emission-absorption spectrum pai...

The stellar halo and outer disk of M 33

We present first results from a Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of red giant branch (RGB) stars in M33. The radial velocity distributions of the stars in our fields are well described by three Gaussian components, corresponding to a candidate halo component with an uncorrected radial velocity dispersion of σ ≃ 50 km s, a candidate disk component with a dispersion σ ≃ 16 km s, and a third compo...

Does the Milky Way have a Maximal Disk?

The Milky Way is often considered to be the best example of a spiral for which the dark matter not only dominates the outer kinematics, but also plays a major dynamical role in the inner galaxy: the Galactic disk is therefore said to be “sub-maximal.” This conclusion is important to the understanding of the evolution of galaxies and the viability of particular dark matter models. The Galactic e...

Production of Milky-way Structure by the Magellanic-clouds

Previous attempts at disturbing the galactic disk by the Magellanic Clouds relied on direct tidal forcing. However, by allowing the halo to actively respond rather than remain a rigid contributor to the rotation curve, the Clouds may produce a wake in the halo which then distorts the disk. Recent work reported here suggests that the Magellanic Clouds use this mechanism to produce disk distortio...
