چکیده

Statistical and spectral analyses of the manipulation of a canonical zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer using static roughness and low-frequency dynamic roughness patches are presented. A shift of spectral energy away from the wall downstream of the roughness patch is observed. The dynamic roughness is shown to disrupt the structure of the boundary layer, while embedding its periodic signature in an extensive stretch of the downstream ow eld.

New perspectives on the impulsive roughness-perturbation of a turbulent boundary layer

The zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate was perturbed by a short strip of two-dimensional roughness elements, and the downstream response of the flow field was interrogated by hot-wire anemometry and particle image velocimetry. Two internal layers, marking the two transitions between rough and smooth boundary conditions, are shown to represent the edges of a ‘stres...

Perturbation of a turbulent boundary layer by spatially-impulsive dynamic roughness

The ubiquity of wall-bounded flows in nature and industry make the potential impact of artificial manipulation as enticing as the academic challenges that it presents. It is clear that large gains in terms of both understanding of fluid physics and vehicular efficiency are theoretically possible, at least in flows where large amplification of input disturbances is possible. Equally it is assume...

Phase relationships in presence of a synthetic large-scale in a turbulent boundary layer

A synthetic spanwise-constant spatio-temporal mode is excited in a flat plate turbulent boundary layer through a spatially impulsive patch of dynamic wall-roughness. The streamwise wavelength of the synthetic mode approximately corresponds to the very large-scale motions present in high Reynolds number wall turbulence. Hot wire anemometer measurements made downstream of the roughness forcing re...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...

Dynamic roughness perturbation of a turbulent boundary layer

The zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate was perturbed by a temporally oscillating, spatial impulse of roughness, and the downstream response of the flow field was interrogated by hot-wire anemometry and particleimage velocimetry. The key features common to impulsively perturbed boundary layers, as identified in Jacobi & McKeon (J. Fluid Mech., 2011), were investiga...
