ESA's Mars Express Mission – Europe on Its Way to Mars
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction In the broad context of planetary science, Mars represents an important transition between the outer volatile-rich, more oxidised regions of the accretion zone of the terrestrial bodies (asteroid belt) and the inner, more refractory and less oxidised regions from which Earth, Venus and Mercury accreted. Its size, the degree of internal activity, the age of its surface features, and the density of its atmosphere are manifestations of Mars’ special position and its transitional character. Its parameters are intermediate between those of the large terrestrial planets (Earth, Venus) and the smaller planetary bodies (Mercury, Moon, and asteroids). Although geologically less evolved, the Martian surface is more Earth-like than that of any other terrestrial planet. Consequently, the exploration of Mars is crucial for a better understanding of the Earth from the comparative-planetology perspective.

Airborne and spaceborne ice sounding of Antarctica, Mars and Europa
Satellite-based radio echo sounding technique is of interest to the Earth science community over Antarctica and Greenland, as well as to the planetary science community for exploring subsurface structures of Mars and Europa. Pioneered by the Mars exploration community using MARSIS radar on board the Mars Express mission, such a technique has demonstrated ice sounding capability down to a few ki...

متن کاملImproving the Exterior Orientation of Mars Express Hrsc Imagery
This paper focusses on the estimation of exterior orientation parameters of the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) orbiting planet Mars during the European Mars Express mission since January 2004. One of the challenges for the photogrammetric processing of HRSC images is the low number of Ground Control Points (GCPs) on Mars which can be identified and measured in the images in the usual way....

This paper summarizes Phase I and II analysis results from NASA’s recent Mars DRA 5.0 study which re-examined mission, payload and transportation system requirements for a human Mars landing mission in the post-2030 timeframe. Nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) propulsion was again identified as the preferred in-space transportation system over chemical/aerobrake because of its higher specific impuls...
